Default Anti Diesel Data... Ban it! :)

Hello,

Neighbour across the road needs a new car, his brainwashed mind told him to save money and buy a diesel.
(2 retired teachers, fancies a Golf)
Salesmen had a smart tie and a nice manner, and has got a lovely poverty spec 1.6 Diesel S model to sell.

The list price is £17150 for a 5 door.
.....The list price for an S 1.2 Petrol (5 less horse power mind) is £15735.

(He is a plodder, doesn't car about torques, 8000mpa, he's not bothered about resale as he would keep it till he croaks if he could)

So I did some calcs for him....

His diesel car benefit comes in at 7.44 years of ownership, and then at £0.02 per mile (and thats taking VED into account)

1.2 105 horse takes 2.32 years
1.4 Petrol 80 hoss is 6.31 years.

Even at 20000 miles
1.2 90 is 3.67
1.2 105 is 1.16
1.4 80 is 3 years before any Diesel benefit.. 20000 miles!!

Ban it from car use!!!!

The bigger cost saving would be to buy second hand

Indeed, diseasals are meh! but can make sense second hand when they have lost most of their forecourt value.

I bought a hundred thousand miler which need 2.5 spent on it - probably even dafter

- the torque is a nice addition to be honest , but in the same postion agian id have stuck with my 5 year ole 1.6 petrol ( despite no a/c , cruise )

Buying a new diesel youd have to be mad unless your commuting to the other end the country on the w/e

I only bought a diesel becuse I do 20K+ miles a year. If I was only doing 8k I wouldn't hesitate to by a petrol. On that mileage, it doesn't make financial sence to buy an oil burner.

Yes, there is a myth that diesels are free to run and petrols are bad bad guzzling monsters, my brother in law practically gave away his V8 Discovery for half what he paid 18 months earlier to pay 17 grand for a diesel Golf to do about 5 or less thousand a year which seemed bonkers to me.

Neighbours bought a Disco diesel, new, 30 odd grand, she drives it to the station a mile away and pays to park it there and gets on a train !

The proper diesel savers are the old ******* that do big mileages in ancient 405's that run on Chip Fat, Red, old Engine oil and whatever else will burn, until they get caught that is.

My 3k, 125kmiles Golf TDI was awesome, could get more than 500 miles to a tank and it did feel a bit magic, after driving scoobs for many years.
I agree that buying a brand new diesel is utterly pointless though

Have to agree that the PD engines were a revelation but he lost nine grand on the Disco and bought the Golf new to save on fuel, ok the Discovery V8 was a bit extreme but LPG would have been a cheaper option. Would rather have a diesel than a sub 2 litre petrol in most cases though, our Galaxy is diesel and I think for heavy vehicles with a job to do that doesnt involve "fast" then its the way to go, I like diesels and have driven a few powerful ones but they leave me cold, one I really cant understand is diesel convertibles, what a horrific idea !

Only ever bought one new car, and that was in Germany when it was purchase tax and import duty free as long as you kept it for at least a year. It was about half the price of the same car in the UK.

I would never bother with a new one over here. Much better to buy one after the initial loss of value as you drive it away from the showroom has been mad by the original owner.

Even with a late model second Hander, they command a premium over petrol so the same theory still applies.

TX.. Think he is going back to the drawing board now, will be interesting to see what he gets. Pointed him to a broker that will do a diesel for £2.5k less than stealer.

I hate the noise, smell and drive of diesel cars, so I will continue my cause.

Also, industry emissions and Health and safety has improved life for us all, but childhood asthma increases.... Go figure... What other nasty particulate emissions have increased!???

... He could spend his £ 2k petrodiesel difference on an LPG conversion and enjoy 100mpg equivalent!
