Default Road Tax & MOT Question

My car tax ran out at end of August. The car is presently off the main drag, as it were, being fixed up for an MOT later this month. Current MOT is past its sell-by date as well.

I hope to get MOT and get Road Tax as from 1st October thereby missing out September completely.

Now should I be going through the SORN process or can I just get on with life and not worry?

David

in theory it is either deemed to be on the road - thus requiring Road Tax or SORN'ed there is no grey in-between area

but tbh I would carry on and if they write to you pay the month you missed

Yes they have tightened up on Sorn now. They were even talking about a sorned car needing to be insured as well at one time! Think that died the death though.

You need to SORN it or you will get an £80 fine plus having to pay the back tax. Not sure if a 1 week/2 week allowance is actually made, but for the sake of 1min on the website, I wouldn't risk it.

SORN mine last month, took less time than taxing it and you can tax it at any time. If the DVLA mobile crew spot it it'll defo cost ya.

It doesn't need to be spotted, the computer will automatically send a fine out if the car is neither taxed or declaired SORN.

SORN it, you can do it online, then take the V5 into the post office when you do apply for tax.

My eldest has just done that, for only a couple of days......better than an £80 fine

Thanks guys - I'm glad I asked as I can't afford 80 quid right now!

Anyway I have just spoken to a nice girl in Swansea who has marked it down as SORN.

She said as soon as I apply for tax then SORN is cancelled. Slightly complicated by the fact that MOT will be issued in NI which is not recognised by rest of UK system!

Cheers, David

i am not convinced they are that efficient

I had to back tax a car (online) a few years ago, I had not realised for over a month but the online software would not let me put the correct start date in (to keep things continuous)

I had put the 1st of the (then) current month -- but as I did this the website informed me I was breaking the law as records showed I had missed a month and no sorn was found

I had no choice and just clicked yes -- but I have heard nothing of it

(maybe it is because I register my cars in Pakistan though)

but actually as has been said just as easy to sorn it

I was convinced after receiving a fine for a car that's all the way up my parents driveway. Still if this system has done anything to reduce the amount of tossers driving about with no tax/insurance then I guess it was worth it.

point taken

maybe I was just lucky

and yes having had a car smack'd hard by an untaxed/un-insured hillbilly t0ssp0t, I think on balance it is a good thing too

MOT's can't be far behind now as well

Going on friends experience, they are anywhere up to 4 years behind in issuing fines as I know of several people who have had fines for cars/bikes they sold years ago, but had a period of being untaxed. I think they are just looking through the database for gaps in taxed periods.
