Default The Greatest Bassist

For me there can only be one. In his heyday (before he was murdered) there was NO-ONE in the world doing what he was doing with an electronic bass. This man was truly a genius.

Nowadays much of what he brought to the world has been copied and imitated. He was probably always best working with others - Mitchell, Metheney, Zawinul, nevertheless his talent always shone through.

James Jamerson for me - practically invented GROOOOVE with the funk brothers.

Next has to be Larry Graham.

Jeff Berlin as a jazzer is also a hero.

Jaco was a pioneer - legend.

Competent but derivative. I remember seeing him live before he was famous. The stage was a foot high so I was standing right in front of him.

I agree. The sound, the attitude - he was the coolest bassplayer on the planet. The sound of his fender Precision on those early albums was just so visceral and in your face - he spawned a million soundalikes. It's one 'L', by the way.

Agreed JJB was cool - how about Simonon, Hooky and the Legendary Vicious?

As an aside, Mingus (who tops the lot) thought that the greatest contemporary bass line he had heard was Walking on the Moon by Sting and the Police.

Thumbs up to Simenon and Hooky, but I wouldn't give the Sidster houseroom. He certainly "lived" the part though, didn't he?

Completely eclipsed by the drumming on that track. The best things in music are the most memorable, not the fastest or the trickiest or the highest number of notes per second, so Walking on the Moon certainly qualifies.

But by your own definition which is more memorable? The bass line is what people remember. The drumming is superlative. Quite a band they were

For the mention of Sidney Vish, as a bass player, in the same thread as Jaco (and Flea, of course ).
