Default Thinking of moving to York (or surrounding area)

Hi all, the wife and myself are thinking of relocating from North East Derbyshire to York. We have 2 daughters aged 5 and 10 whose needs will also need to be taken into consideration if the move was to happen.

I would be grateful if anyone can provide a lowdown on places to live, areas to avoid, quality schools, council tax rates, etc. etc.

I appreciate that a fair amount of factual information can be saught from the internet but you can't beat honest opinions from real people in the know.

Thanks in advance.

Living and York and working in London I find it hard to believe that York is anything like as expensive as London to shop, eat or drink!!

It is a great place to live - Clifton is OK, Tang Hall is not so good. Heworth is nice enough as is Acomb.

Not all four bed houses are £500k either. In fact £500k will get you a very nice house.

If you want to go outside of York to go a bit cheaper then Dunnington and Stamford Bridge are very nice and good value. They are 15mins drive from the centre of York.

Personally I think it is a lovely place to be although I live outside the city itself.

For stats and price information look at upmystreet.com

I think I'd rent somewhere for a while first to get a feel for the place and suss out the good and not so good areas.

Don't really know the area but have had a long weekend in York itself. Lovely place, many pubs and other cool stuff to do. Didn't think it was particularly expensive myself The countryside around there is beautiful too.

I lived in Wetherby from 1983 to 2009 and if i had the choice i would be there now. Worth a look - 15 miles from York and right on the A1 for easy access up and down the country

I live in North West Leeds and visit York fairly reguarly, It's no more expensive to eat/drink than anywhere in central Leeds, I can't see it being as expensive as London at all

I thought the York / Leeds / Harrogate area was known as the Golden Triangle for property prices? Beautiful place to live (got a couple of close friends living just outside of Ripon) but expensive to buy houses in.

We went to look at a property in Dringhouses on Sunday - sadly it was located in the middle of what can only be described as a "posh" council estate and one of the the windows had kindly been put through by a missile of some sort.

We arrived in Dringhouses just after the races had finished so there plenty of people trickling back into the area which gave us an idea of the kind of folks living in the area and it's not really for us.

Shame really cos the house was beautiful inside.

I live in Howden which is 20 miles away. Drive in to York for work. Takes me ~30 mins, but I don't have to go in to the City Centre. There is a direct train service to York, Leeds and London, so works for me.

Really nice places to consider would be,
Haxby, Wiggington, Strensall, poppleton (both upper and nether), Boroughbridge Road area of Acomb, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe , Fulford, Heworth village area and some parts of Heworth.
Might be a little above 200k but worth considering

He only drinks doubles

The Golden Triangle is to the west and north of York and East side of Leeds.

There are plenty of places outside the 'Golden Triangle' designation that a lovely to live.

Market Weighton has been mentioned. Between Market Weighton and York you have Dunnington, Stamford Bridge, the Cattons, Wilberfoss, Pocklington and a dozen other villages. Some of them are very nice. If you accept a newer property rather than a character Yorkshire brick property you can hit your budget. Older character properties can be very expensive.
