Messerschmitt 109's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq21M...eature=related
looks and sounds incredible
I had the pleasure at helping start up and ground-handle a proper DB603 powered ME 109 back in 1990/91 after it has just finished its rebuild and was awaiting its CAA cert after its test flights.
Happy days!
UPDATE
STICKY THREAD RE HENDON/COSFORD TRIP IN EARLY OCTOBER 2010 NOW AT THE TOP OF NSR.
Please contribute to that one if possible and your preferences for dates and location. Would be good to 'do' both sites over the next few months

When much younger 109's often visited airshows.............sounded like they were just about to break down !! Like on the telly when the engine dies followed by a whistling sound and then the sound of a plane crashing LOL
The others that did the rounds were Spanish 109's powered by Merlins (bouchons IIRC), over the years I seem to read quite a few have crashed on landing
Shaun
PS Wooden tailplane so those on the clip are G-K's ??

And technically a much better aircraft than the spitfire
I'm taking the kids to the RAF museum in Hendon tomorrow, don't know who's more excited. I'm almost tempted to start building WWII model aircraft again

The WW2 movie companies used to get most of their Luftwaffe stuff ex Spanish airforce, so the geeks amongst us would soon spot a Merlin engined 109 or He111.
Until very recently, Movies used to be a good source of income for old Warbird owners. But now the presumably cheaper (and much safer!) option of Computer Generated aircraft has taken much of that away, which is a real shame for us enthusiasts, especially as there must be as many airworthy Spitfires, Hurricanes, 109's & 190's about now as there has been for many decades.

It was reputed to be a very capable aircraft with excellent handling. I'd love to get my hands on one.
There used to be one in the RAF Finningley small museum years ago, I don't know where it went, maybe even to Hendon, Cosford or Duxford.
The Germans have always been very advanced in aeronautical affairs and we are lucky that they were too late to get some of their later machines into the air during WW2. They thought of all sorts of designs which were the forerunner of many clever designs in use today.
Can't remember for sure JonMc but when I went to Hendon a good few years ago I think I had flown about four of the first aircraft you see as you walk in as well as the big triangle of course

I last went to Hendon during training back in 1999,and before that as a kid. My kids asked to go and as it is both local and free I thought why not
All of my flying experience has been for pleasure having opted to be sponsored through my in-service degree rather than to fly for a living

Both Hendon and Cosford are free too, you only pay for parking and food if you eat at the cafe. I'd like to see the new stuff at Cosford as it is several years since I was based there and they have a new Cold War display iirc.

If a few people are interested then i certainly would be, i for one would love for Les to come along and talk me through a few of the aircraft, the odd anecdote would be a great addition to the trip. if a few people show an interest then how about going towards the end of Sep't or such???
If PSL can get time of from Morrissons and come along then all the better although those trolleys do not return themselves you know!

The Cold War display at Cosford is excellent.
The Opel Senator in there is like something out of an '80s Bond Film
The suspended aircraft are shown off well.

Saw one in action last month at Farnborough Airshow in a mock dog fight with a couple of spitfires. It does sound good - but not anything like as good as a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.
It was an impressive sight watching them all looping and diving around at just a few hundred feet above.

Great stuff, How about it then Les, could you do a day, ideally a sat or sun this year? if so I'll post something up or ask the mods to to see if we can get a few aviation buffs there
