Mart
With the full moon conjunction, there is good potential here.

Our astronony club is having a meteor party.

PERSEIDS PARTY.
This year's Perseid Meteors are blessed with very favourable conditions: Maximum is predicted for 21h on 12 August, and the Moon will be only 2 days old, so won't interfere. The radiant is circumpolar from Ireland, and so plenty of meteors should be seen any time after the sky gets dark that evening. In fact some Perseids can be seen any night from early August until about the 19th, but they are most frequent on the days around maximum.
The radiant lies roughly between Perseus and Cassiopeia, and so is rising in the NE each evening as twilight ends, but the meteors can be seen in any part of the sky. Many are bright, and some leave persistent 'trains' lasting a few seconds or so. In good conditions you can see an average of about one Perseid per minute
The Irish Astronomical Association will be holding a 'Perseid Party' at Delamont Country Park, near Killyleagh, Co Down, just off the A22 between Killyleagh and Downpatrick, on the evening of Thursday 12th, or if the weather is bad that evening, on the following night, Friday 13th, assuming it's not a washout too! This will be a 'Fry-up', rather than a BBQ, so bring any sort of a gas or spirit cooker you may have, plus frying pan, and whatever grub & drinks you want. Also your own plates, cups/mugs, cutlery etc.
For more details and updates re the weather decision for Thursday or Friday night, see www.irishastro.org.

the radiant Les, is where the meteors appear to come from. the part of the sky is between the bottom of the "W" in cassiopeia and the head of perseus

Cool

sorry to hijack this thread but I have a astomomy related question... last night whilst out with the dogs about 12ish there was a big bright light in the eastern sky (over the irish sea) just to the left of the moon and about 30 degrees down from a horizontal line from the moon, it wasn't moving or flashing so it wasn't a ufo or aeroplane and it wasn't flickering like a star does. Any idea's ????

in all probability it was jupiter. thought it might have been venus but far to late after sunset. Jupiter rises at 00:55 at the start of the month and at 22:55 by month’s end. It is in Pisces and brightens during the month from mag -2.5 to mag -2.7. (read very very bright). get the 10x50 binos out and have a look at the 4 pin points of light nearby the planet. the biggest 4 of the jovian moons.

In my 10" i can watch the moon's shadow transit the surface of the planet.

thanks big fella, I'll have to hoke out the bino's and get a better look, I would of thought you liked looking at a different type of moon with bino's

Its kind of eerie though to see such a spectacular sight, but no

accompanying noise !

Yes i think there is, should go on for another week yet (i think) but yesterday and today should be the best chance weather permitting, saw a few down here (Devon/Cornwall border) on Tuesday night, but it was cloudy last night and Wednesday.

Disappointing here. We had clear skies, I saw one and Mrs Leslie saw another and that was it! Maybe we looked at the wrong time.
