Default How long will be spent in hospital?

Mum is going this afternoon for pre surgical admission. She is due to go under the knife tomorrow at some point, for what is due to be approx a five hour procedure.
For some reason when being discharged was discussed, it was suggested she would only be in for a couple of days, and might be released by Wednesday.

Now the op is removing damaged tissue and some of the tumour from her breast, then to take tissue and skin from her bum and tum to replace and patch up the removal site.

To me, a 72 year old have a procedure like that, I get the impression she will be in a bit longer.
Only reason I ask is because I want to make sure everything is right at home before she comes out, so am trying to work out a realistic time scale. And yes, before it's said, I will of course be asking the surgical and ward staff too.

Does seem quick to be sending her home, but they do now.
My friends hubby has been fighting cancer for 5 years now. Last week he had surgery on his brain to remove 3 tumours. He had the surgery on the Wednesday, he was home on the Friday
All the best for Mum, Snazy and a big hug from me x

Crikey that is quick.
My thought on it is, with her having 3 op sites, it's going to make her comfort difficult to achieve, laying down seems to be impossible etc. Because of her COPD she can only lay in a limited number of ways.

Jamie, that's what I said I was doing too lol. But if they have already given her the impression it's only a couple of days, I'm trying to gauge if that was to get her to go for the op, or a realistic time. Can't speak to them till tomorrow at the earliest, more than likely post op.

Time will tell I guess but I better get off my **** and get things sorted for her.

I was told it depends on what they called your morbidity. I think it means how quickly you personally tend to heal up.

I had a major abdominal operation but was home after 3 days. Just was not allowed to drive for a month until the muscles healed. Its possible she might get out early.

My wife recently had major surgery and was in hospital for 10 days but this was due to her getting an infection otherwise she would have been out in 5 days. I think a lot will depend how things are healing up, how your mother feels, and whether she will have help etc at home if she comes out early.

Anyway I hope all goes well for her and she recovers quickly.

Cheers for that Les and Chip.
With regards to help, I will be here for her, have taken time off work to make sure I am, but she will NOT accept outside help.

Her desire to get out of the hospital asap is based on 2 things, smoking and the temp in there. She hates the temperature of hospitals, and always complains abouy them lol. I just said to her ask for a fan... her response "yeah right!" Oh well, I tried.

Thanks for the point regarding healing, im guessing that it will also depend on how the op goes, complications etc.

Not wishing for her to stay in for ages, but given her past history for discharging herself etc, I dont want her getting out of there before she should either.

The less time in hospital, the less chance of infection is the current thinking.

Hope all goes well for her.

Cheers mate. Fair point too. We are currently sitting in a nice ward in Guys. Shame she thought it was Lewisham Hospital we were going to... As a result of that we were late

I have always handled the letters but as I was away my sister took care of them and forgot to tell me about the change.

Waiting to see the doctors now before I leave. "They won't be long" I was told almost 2 hours ago lol. Used to that now.
Crap journey here though, patience on its limit.

Mum is already talking about "when you come to pick me up"

Cheers guys. I was for some reason drained by the time I got home this evening, prob a bit stressed I guess.
She is on the list for PM surgery, second for the afternoon session in theatre, so by the time the op is done and out of recovery, visiting time will almost be up. But I'm gonna try and hang about for the last couple of hours of visiting time to try and get a look in.

In the meantime i have to get the house sorted for her return, maybe a new bed for her and some other odds and sods sorted out. Time to spank the credit card me thinks.

Cheers to the well wishers.

My friends hubby has gamma knife on his brain on Tuesday. The op last week was to clear up debri from another op. Fingers crossed for him. He was 51 a few weeks ago. Bless him, the nicest man you could ever meet.
Makes me sick that the swines of this life seem to go on for ever

All the best to your Mum, Snazy xx

Understatement of the month award goes to you Les lol.
Thankfully I'm back in the driving seat and have control of the letters again now. Next up, polyp removal in a few months.
