I know, I know - it happens to us all. Bird flies out of nowhere and bounces off the car... cue much swearing and picking feathers out of various car parts for weeks.

Only. I was cycling in.

Flaming sparrow shot out of a gap between two trees and bounced off me helmet. I couldn't work out what the hell was happening until I looked around and saw this dumb **** bird describing weird spirals in the sky. I'm not sure who was more stunned.

I think it tried to avoid me at the last minute and only caught me with a glancing blow, but bloody hell, it fair woke me up.

to be honest I think it would've missed if I hadn't. It really was a glancing blow - good thing too as I probably would've taken a fall if it had been straight on.

I read somewhere that cycle helmets protect minor knocks only (which your head is quite adequate at protecting against) & are useless if you get hit by a car etc? Thus I don't wear em
