Default WTF is WRONG with this country???

Just been up to Wickes for some waste pipe, 43mm, to replace one that has split.

When I get there, it's all 41mm or 32mm. No adaptors, no 43mm pipe, no 43mm fittings.

I ask what's going on, to be told, no, you CAN'T have bought the 43mm stuff here, ours has always been 41mm.

I get home and there, in the garage, a short piece of waste pipe, (NOT long enough for what I want), but clearly stamped "Wickes 43mm waste pipe"

WHY have they changed from 43 to 41mm? WHAT EARTHLY purpose does it serve?

And I'm CERTAIN that continental sizes are 43mm down...........

I think I'll be a pikey and just wrap the old with parcel tape

Yeah, botch it up with some gaffer tape. Did one of my outside pipes a couple of years ago as a temporary job and still holding strong.

Don't immigrants use 41mm

Sure it's not confusion between an ID and OD measurement?

Because 41mm pipe can be imported from China for a fraction of the cost that the 43mm pipe made exclusively in the UK. Probably

The countries gone to pot ... who's in charge? OH, yes, the Tories - no change there then

Also as mentioned above, some pipes are not what you would expect. I had a bag of 32mm fittings (elbows etc) and bought another rake of fittings for two batheroom suites, when i came to use them some were really slack and did fk all. Turns out they were Italian, measuered them and they were 33mm, where as the uk spec were 31mm.

Whilst not having had the same problem with ill-fitting pipes, I have found Wickes to be carp compared to our old Do It All that closed last year due to competition from Wickes.

The paint selection is a bit naff. The own brand electrical equipment isn't that great and overpriced. The screws all have dodgy heads that require their own little bits so if you lose the bit you need another box of screws. The wood selection is all bent and you might get one truly straight piece of wood out of half a dozen.

There are at least two different plastics used in these waste pipes. Ones around 41mm tend to be push fit or compression and are polypropylene or similar. ISTR 43mm ones are ABS cement fix. i.e. glue together... Though you can make compression fittings work with them.

That is EXACTLY the issue.
I was going to post that, but you beat me to it.

I believe there are step up/own couplings you can buy to mate a compression pipe to a solvent weld pipe.

I understand how you feel in the face of shop assistants who just can't be bothered to help you properly.

I would certainly go back, ask for the manager and the person who served you, ask again about 43 mm pipe saying what you were told, and then produce your piece of pipe when they come out with the same piece of guff!
