Default Scottish West Coast in June

As it says in the title i was considering a walking holiday on the Scottish west coast or the islands e.g. Skye or another nearby in the next few weeks having never been there in the summer i wondered if anybody had been there and knows what the midge situation is and also how crowded the Hills get?

Prime midge season. June - October west coast can be a mare. Hope you like the little beasts... tends to be much less on the east coast but it ain't as pretty.

Not long back and to be honest they are not as bad as previous years (some say due to the colder winter) but still beginning to munch happily.

If walking they shouldent be too bad, but as soon as you stop it's party time for the midges!

Some cracking driving roads up there as well, well worth bringing the car for

Midges can be bad but a few careful precautions and you can cope fine. As said, they are not as bad this year. If it's sunny and or windy they stay away.

Worse at dusk, hardly ever a problem during the day unless dull and damp. Attracted to co2.

Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil body spray is without doubt the best product.

The upside is that the north west coast has some of the best scenery and beaches you'll find anywhere.

I have spent quite a lot of time on Skye and around Arisaig and Mallaig.

I must have been lucky as I never had an issue with midges. Much, much worse in central Scotland or Kielder (the worst I have experienced!).

Have to agree about Kielder (and that's coming from a Scot well used to midges). Had to adandon a weekends camping a few years ago due to their severity

Well then you are in for a treat, some of the beach's are as beautiful as you will ever see, although the water will freeze you're nuts off
Also if you are a serious walker make you're way to Glen Shiel and tackle the "five sisters of Kintail", stunning ridge walk, although it's a 7 or 8 hour job.
