Default My TomTom XL stopped working....

Lent it the lads, now, every time we switch it on, it asks us for what language, how to read the time etc etc, until it gets to the page to select voice, when it hangs, before switching itself off andf starting all over again.

Any hints/tips, other than chuck it and start with a Garmin?
It's about 18 months old

Right, tried dunx's idea: nowt.

And when connected to the computer, it doesn't recognise that it is, nor does the computer see it, although the screen on the TomTom is lit up etc

They are crap! Call the TomTom helpline and ask them to fix it for you. Although it's 18 months old, they still have an obligation to do so (at least they did with mine).

I could suggest a few things, but after spending two days trying to get mine working, I realise that there are about a million different things that could be wrong with it!

Bin bin bin bin, dah dah daaah daaaah da daaaaaaah. Trash!

Honestly mate, they go wrong alot (on my third now) Tom tom are quite helpful though if you bleet on at them. However if it's irrepairable, i'd suggest a new one, don't try to fix it, it will cost you more searching for all the little parts

Update: Been onto Tomtom, they talked me through various things, sent me mail and even rang back twice to help.

The upshot is: the maps are corrupted and have had to be deleted. Because I didn't back it up when I got it, I now have to choose between a new one, around £140, or new maps for £50.

Question is: WHY did the maps corrupt? the lass I spoke to said she didn't know.

And if I buy new maps, will I then spend hours doing this again and again?

Or should I junk it and get a Garmin?

Are they just not mini pc's?

Might be able to wipe the lot and install Linux or something.

Yes, it can be formatted. In fact it has been. That's when we discovered the maps were corrupted, they hadn't backed up properly.

At least if I BUY a new map, it's mine and I can use it again and again if it corrupts, plus they give you free updates for four years.

Wife, of course, blames me for lending it, and the kids for "doing something to it". The Tomtom lady said not, though.

That's a bit harsh, doesn't the tomtom home application let you download and install the original map from their website?
I'd probably look for an alternative source if that was the case.

You can get the maps for "free" . Connect the tomtom and run. A disk check this can sometimes be the problem with corrupt maps.
