Any birders out there?
Am I risking my small birds?
Just bought and installed agarden bird feeder and was fascinated to see a Jackdaw come down several times and take bits off it.
BUT: I'm not sure if a Jackdaw is a nest-robber in the same league as, say, a Magpie?
So do I encourage it, or has it got an appointment with Mr Webley sometime in it's future?

Wikipedia says they do eat chicks. But I'm sure with other food sources, that would be a last resort rather than a preferred food.... I dunno?

I don't think they are a threat:

Carrion Crows, Magpies and Jays are the worst common garden birds for killing off fledglings. The Jackdaw is considerably smaller and not a threat to nesting birds with young.

Oh I don't blame any bird that uses the bird feeder, that's what it's there for, but I HAVE watched heplessly as a pair of Magpies raided the nest of a blackbird and carried off every fledgling one after the other. Couldn't get a clear shot at the Magpies.
So I don't want to ENCOURAGE something that will kill the other birds' young at a later date.

Yes I see the point and I would feel exactly the same if I saw that. Magpies are pretty untrustworthy in most respects too.
It is all part of nature of course but I would also want to protect the fledglings. I would also be having a go at them if I had the chance.
