I know someone who hasn't worked for about 7 years.
He's an alcoholic, quite bad
Council tax is waived
he has a (big) one bed flat, all rent paid by gov (he lives alone)
He get's £90 per week from the government to do what he likes with (most of this is dole, he also gets a disability allowance cos of the alcoholic "disease")

The "Disease" description really gets on my nerves. Drink too much, too often, and you bcome addicted to Alcohol, just like you become addicted to **** if you smoke.
Disease? Don't make me laugh

Shes been hardcore clinic 3 times now , relapses usually within a week
But frankly it doesnt seem to be worse than it was ten year ago , even the liver ( apparently)
I assume the next ten years will do the serious damage

The one I know has trouble walking, he doesn't eat the right stuff, if he does eat it will be a burger or some crap from the freezer. No fruit, no veg, no vitamins. He has no self respect and basically doesn't care about anyone, let alone himself.
45, and walks like a 90 year old on the brink of death.

If it is a disease then is should be curable in this day and age, IMHO not a disease more a lack of any self control or self respect and a selfish thing to do. I have a relation who is an alcoholic, he lives to drink booze, now pretty much blind and dabetic + liver problems, not slowed down his drinking much. Shame his son and dauhter have to watch him slowly drink himself to death, he does not want to be helped.
All benefits for people with this 'terrible' disease should be paid as/in food stamps redeemable for food, etc and not booze, no point in fueling the addiction. Same goes for druggies.

I wouldnt swap with them but it does irk me to be paying taxes to keep them in the manner to which they have become acustomed.
Why cant we throw them in drying out centres, same with anyone so fat they need a mobility scooter, stick them in a place with no food and they will get thinner, it isnt a gland thing, unless that means they eat huge plates of deep fried Glands every day.

I once turned up for armed guard duty then another guy turned up on my shift. He had been drinking all night, fully aware of his responsibility, and thought it was ok to pick up a weapon then roll on over to the gate.Suffice to say, he was turned about and sent home. Not the first time Id seen him in work stinking.

Yup, this is a hard issue to solve. For those who are paying to keep them its annoying. For those who are alcoholics, its a pretty terrible live and most are quite badly depressed (alcohol is a depressant).
Problem is that the addiction is so great that they will find some way to drink. If you give them food stamps, then they will just sell them to someone for cash. Even if you make them present ID in the supermarket to prove that the food stamps are for them, and that they are not buying booze, they will just have an arrangement with someone that the food is theirs in return for cash.
Its not hard to do, just find an old lady and offer to do her shopping. She gives you cash (booze), you use your food stamps to buy her provisions. I've seen the most lazy feckless alcoholics walk two miles in freezing blizzard conditions without a coat just to buy two cans of beer. The addiction is a strong one

Food drops to the door is the way to go.
I can sympathise, I love booze and boozing, in fact more than alcoholics as I realise to do it on an ongoing basis and not have to stop and go to AA meetings or die because my liver is knackered so my limited abstinence skills mean I could never be a proper alcy, that and I dont enjoy Toilet Disk or Kouros as an aperitif, cant enter a Wetherspoons without loosing the will to live and value my non alcy status too much !

My uncle used to be a very talented guy, could do pretty much anything from window fitting to roof repair.
He started drinking at about 25 and lost his wife and two kids.. he moved in with his mum in her family home .. nice big council house .. after a few years she died and he took the lease .. big house, big garden, all bills paid as he became reg as disabled through the drink ..
About a month ago he had a heart attack in front of his son and died.. must have taken a lot of tax payers money over the years.

It was explained to me that the liver can regenerate say in the case of a liver which had part of it removed for cancer and the remaining part is healthy.
Alcohol causes Cirrhosis which hardens the lever, is irreversible, and can also turn cancerous. That is the real damage and is a killer of course.
Maybe John Banks could put us straight on all that.
