Strange that-it won't got to the article. Thanks Jamie, I guessed it was to do with the Typhoons, but I don't know much about that situation anyway.

I guess it's down to how far they push the performance of the engines compared to airliners.

I gather that fighter engines these days can be running hotter internally than the melting point of the metal they are made from!

Most jet engines are in that state, IIRC. Its the cooling system used that stops them melting.

Still won't work, but I don't see why the Typhoon engine should be significantly different to any other jet as far as the volcanic dust bit is concerned.

Believe it's all to do with bypass ratio's Les. I don't understand the technicalities, but the higher the bypass ratio is, the more tolerant it is.

Well I imagine that indicates the amount of air from the large front fan which diverts air past the engine instead of going through it to generate thrust. The larger the ratio the more air stays outside the enigne and that air wont be depositing ash on the vulnerable hot internals of the engine.

I have to say that is a guess and might not be correct!
