My friend has one of these in his house connected to a Satellite Dish

I was thinking about installing it in my new house that i will be moving into over the next few weeks.

I thought it was quite impressive, as you currently have two free HD channels..

Question: it does pick up Sky movies etc, however the channels are scrambled. I was told i can buy a card if i want to un-scramble these channels..

anyone got this...?

Freesat boxes are great for people who have sky dishes but have cancelled their Sky subscriptions. You do get a good range of freeview channels but i believe some different channels to the normal ones on Freeview. You should get BBC HD and also ITV HD, there are others coming in the pipeline but the best option if HD viewing is a priority is SKY. Virgin's HD package is pretty poor at the moment. Humax make a great range of PVR boxes and come with a rock solid guarantee. I am not sure about unscrambling the Sky channels that the box receives and shows within the channel listings though.

HD viewing is not priority..saving money is and its good you can save and get two free HD channels I guess.

we are moving into a new house so no Sky exists....

If HD is not your priority then get a freeview box. The difference is that freeview works from your normal aerial and freesat works via a sattelite dish pointed at the astra sattelite I think. I prefer the range of channels on freeview rather than freesat and Humax do a box for freeview viewing that has twin tuners also. This allows you to record one channel and watch another, or record two channels at once and watch a recording at the same time. I have a first generation humax freeview hard drive box in my bedroom and its still going strong after 4years. Look up this box, I recommend it and have the first generation version of it. This box will connect straight to your aerial and can be set to series link program recordings. Humax PVR-9150T - DVB digital TV tuner / HDDr. I do work in a tv shop for all my sins.......

Or as you're in London you could opt for Freeview HD Currently launched to a few lucky areas (including London) - could be what you're looking for.

As said before it depends which box you go for. Freeview uses your aerial, freesat and sky require a dish so if you dont have one and you are on a budget freeview is the way to go. Sky also offer freeview and an assortment of their channels for a one off payment.
The frreview boxes with hard drives pretty much mimic a sjy plus box anyway so it really boils down to what channels you want to watch. For me I had to go Sky. You can tailor your package to a budget and they have a great range of channels. Also they are offering good deals and greatly reduced install costs

to watch sky channels for free you need a linux based hd sat box. you then need to join a card share to get the codes off a card server. sky poll their channels every 3 -4 second to check the correct decryption key.

gone are the days when you could programme a multimac card once a month with all the decryption codes on it for all the providers out there.

the vast majority of cards are now not fast enough to decrypt channels and this is now done in emulation via your linux based sat box with an operating syatem on an image file. i still have my relook 400, my dreambox 7000 and my DM500
