Can I drive a car 205miles from location A (Place of purchase) to location B (test centre close to home) for a MOT legally?

You certainly can: ensure that they record your registered number though (and get it confirmed on a letterhead to take with you in case youre stopped).

Above is correct but does car have to be basically roadworthy? i.e. you can't drive with two bald tyres or lights that don't work? dl

If the lights don't work, remove them. A headlight with a blown bulb is a fail, but no headlight at all still gets a pass

If you're a Gypsy it is mandatory.

thanks for the help guys obviously I would make sure its road worthy before I get in it!!! just not sure about the 205miles read it had to be a local test station? would 205 miles count even though its local to me?

I am basically trying to transport a car from where I have purchased it it has tax but just no MOT I would obviously insure..

Has anyone got any suggestions? has spare teleporting machine in the garage?

Why don't you get it road worthy and tested locally to the place of purchase.

You have answered you own question when you interpret the wording "to a local test station"

Sounds like a fail on the cat if it needs to be tested at your local friendly garage

200+ miles is hardly local, suggest you ask (on here) for a friendly MOT test centre near the car you are looking at and get it MOT'd there.

Without an MOT you are not necessarily insured either as the car is not classsed as road legal - the insurace company does not need to pay out as such it is discressionary - read the small print in you ins policy to see if it says anything about the vehicle needing an MOT to be covered.

If no tax as well then you could be looking at big trouble if you get stopped or are in an accident.

Really you are taking it 200+ miles to perform a teast any MOT station can and will do will not cut much ice if there is a problem/you get stopped.

The law does not specify a maximum distance and it is not open to any interpretation by police officers. I used to regularly drive from Southampton to Sheffield in this manner, quite legally.

I wouldn't trust anyone other than the local chap I have used for years to do the MOT.

Insurance companies aren't bothered about the MOT cert as long as the car is in a fit state to pass one i.e. roadworthy. My mate's Mrs recently had a crash (hit by a truck on the M62) and the insurance company reduced the payout by £50 because of the lack of MOT (they'd forgotten it was due).

Why repeat this rubbish? If you arent sure what youre talking about then youd help more by not posting. There is NO maximum distance - NONE. You can drive the length of the country if you wish and you neednt provide an explanation :bangsheadonwall:.

found this on a website, not sure if its true but it looks official

Use, cause or permit a vehicle to be used on a road without a test certificate is an offence under Section 47, RTA 1988.
Penalty: Fine of up to £2,500 (if the vehicle has 8 or more seats), £1,000 (otherwise). No disqualification, endorsement or points can be awarded.

Re no MOT invalidating Insurance; Because of section 148 RTA 1988
as to condition of the vehicle, Insurance Companies cannot invalidate a certificate issued as far as making it a criminal offence i.e. to use without Insurance (S145).

You need to look a little further. An MOT fail sheet explains the exemption.

There never used to be a maximum distance to the testing station. It must be pre booked of course.
