Default Northern Lights

Over the past few days a strong magnetic storm has been raging over our heads. Here in Norway, where I am currently working offshore near the Arctic Circle, they have had some of the best displays of the Aurora Borealis for many years.

Feast your eyes on these photos.

Oh wow. I'm flying over to Oslo tomorrow for a meeting on Monday morning. Then flying on to Aalesund on Monday evening.
Will be in Bratvaag on Tuesday but I guess this is no where near high enough to see such sights?

It may be far enough North. However the activity has died down over the last 2 nights.

There have been very strong storms up to G3 level which destroyed radio comms and created very strong Aurora too.

We used to loved watching the Northern Lights when we flew across the Atlantic. We used to take the northerly Great Circle route over Iceland and Greenland. fascinating sight, often felt as though it was going to touch the aircraft.

Stunning!

Anyone on here got any idea what exposure / F stop etc etc you'd use to capture such images?

Seen it once from Shropshire of all places.

Would love to see it again, could do from here, I'd just need to shoot out 2 street lights and the flat security light.

This is a good site for all things connected with aurora.

http://spaceweather.com/aurora/galle...si01jg48nejb76

The contributing photographers usually detail camera, lens, exposure and ISO setting.

I was lucky enough to see some magnificent views of the northern lights a few years back whilst working in Iceland. I was stuck out on the coast at 2300hrs setting up the gps on a long reach excavator dredging the sea bed. It was about minus bloody 20, but the view up in the sky will be one I'll remember for the rest of my life! Awesome pictures!

I am not a photo expert but they are not exactly blinding so it would need a fair exposure and the aperture well open I reckon. They do move around most of the time so you might get some blurring.
