Default Litter - why do people do it?

I spend quite a lot of time in the countryside and I am sick of seeing all the plastic bags full of rubbish slung out of car windows as well as plastic bottles and nappies etc, never mind builders waste dumped in lay-bys. I feel that this is just arrogance, some people feel they are so important that someone else can clean up their muck. There is a small patch of communal ground across the road from my house and I go out once a week to clean up the litter just chucked there despite nearby bins. Look on the pavements in any town and see all the chewing gum just spat on the floor often right next to a bin.

I know there are many terrible problems in the world, but to me this is a basic symptom of many people's lack of regard for others, just caught up in their own little world of self importance. We all go nuts when someone dings our car door in a car park and clears off and I think this unthinking scattering of waste is part of the same picture.

Cool

I totally agree, just lazy c*nts with no regard for anyone or anything else.

Of course, they would be up in arms if someone dumped a load of ****e in their garden.

Total lack of respect for anything these days. I once saw a family of four parked up in mc donalds who were in reaching distance of the bin, instead they just wound down their windows and chucked their rubbish on the floor. I felt like getting out and twatting the lazy fcukbags.
Another hate of mine is people who bag up their dog **** anf throw it into the hedge or a tree. I mean at the very least at least scoop it into a hedge out of the way with a stick where it will decompose Instead of leaving it hanging in a tree festering for months on end. If you are too lazy to clean up after your dog you should not have one in the first place.

i think theres categories of people who do this.

1. young drivers who think it's uncool to conform, usually low self esteem, usually with likeminded mates, usually macdonalds type litter.

2. couple with many kids, one or both parents are obese, unemployed, drive a benefit-mobile. kids play **** in the street, music played loudly at home, windows open, garden full of ****.

3. well off couple, creating tasks for the peasants, park in mother and baby spaces, park in disabled spaces slightly diagonally. large 4x4's.

4. builders vans, so full of cr4p on the dashboard that there is simply no room for any more, mainly discard plastic bottles.

etc etc.

Another thing is when I am in a park and the kids just chuck their rubbish on the floor and their parents look on and say nothing. My son is only 3 but he knows full well to put his rubbish in the bin or to expect a rollocking.

Yes, absolutely what the hell is that all about. Why go to the bother of bagging it up and hanging it on a bush. Tw@ts!

People who drop litter have no respect for themselves or others.
If parents instilled the proper disposal of litter into their kids it would become second nature.
The cost of keeping the U.K. tidy must be horrendous, how better this money could be used.

And it will get worse as local councils put out more and more regulations about how and what you can leave for collection. Some people are just going to take the easy option - back of the car, quiet lane and sling it over the fence. dl

I will take people to task about it, nearly come a cropper but I find it so annoying that I have to say something, I NEVER drop anything and will carry a bag of Dog **** for miles as I too cannot understand bagging it up and festooning a fence with it, I can only imagine they might think they may pick it up on the way back but forget, being charitable about it.

I really cannot stand people who litter, I cant imagine I would have anything in comon with them, they are stupid, selfish and ignorant, dropping their rubbish one act that sums them up and shows them for what they are, if you do drop little stop now, its not really that hard, its very simple and the rest of the decent population wont think you are a chavvy scumbag, one simple step to dragging yourself out of the scum mentality.

I would love some mechanism to identify rubbish and track it back to its owner, full skipfull deposited on the lawn in revenge that they have to sift and put back in by hand, failing that a night in the cells and £500 fine.

It is ineviatable that some debris gets out by mistake but the bulk of it is just laziness.

Having witnessed an imbecile dropping a McDonalds bag and drink container from the window of a parked car in the McDonalds car park, I approached the driver with my blood boiling, asked him if he would like me to pick his rubbish up for him. He told me the car park attendant would clear it up later. In a moment of madness and anger, I picked up his discarded rubbish and emptied it onto his lap.

I spent around 8 hours loitering in Manchester airport waiting on a transfer flight some years ago; for security reasons there are no bins in the the terminal. I had bought some sandwiches and something to drink, when I asked where I should put the wrappers and drinks container, I was told to leave it on the ground and someone would come and collect it. Something in me just wouldn't allow me to do it. I spent about 40 minutes wandering about with my bag of rubbish until I located the person who does the clearing up.

Those who litter whether its the *** end flicked from the car window, or a trailer load of junk dumped in a layby, really get my blood boiling.

If you are out in the woods or on a moutain top flick the dogs mess off the path and leave it to decay as nature intended this is Forestry Commision advice as the plastic bags we use to pick it up take 10's of years to rot even when sent to land fill where the natural method disppears with no trace in a couple of weeks. i the park in town or on any hard surface scoop in bag and place in bin provided. (see below)

The council doesnt want anybody to not throw rubbish on the floor, this is obvious by the total lack of litter bins and the fact that now days if your lucky they will tun up once a fortnight and remove half your rubbish from your house the other half they will leave and fine you for trying to get them to dispose of it.

I use to be 100% about taking all litter home and had a bag for my rubbish (e.g. sweet wrappers burger wrappers, drinks bottles etc?) in my car so everything went in the bin at home every day or so but i dont bother now i dont want a half eaten takeaway rotting outside my house for 2 weeks and i make use of what the council provides where ever i am so if there is a bin i use it if there was no bin then they obviously want it left neatly on the floor for their bin men/road sweeper to collect (he probaby comes round more often than my bin man does!) i mean who wouldnt provide a bin in public places outside fast food outlets?

I agree, but the lack of bins in some areas is disgusting, although ot still doesn't give free reign for people to litter. If I can manage to carry some rubbish with me until I find a bin/get home, how come other people can't. It's plain bad manners.

And the attitude 'someone will pick it up/is paid to do it' really gets to me.

I work in a shop and while there is no eating or drinking allowed, people do it. That in itself wouldn't be so much of a problem apart from many who drop whatever crap(normally sausage rolls or spilled pop) on the floor and naturally leave it, or the people who when finished feeding their faces leave the packaging on the floor or shelves. The worst I saw personally, was an old lady sorting out her shopping literally right beside our bin behind the tills, despite being right beside it, she scrumpled up her reciept and threw it on the floor. Well I tell you what, I'm not ****ing paid to pick up after lazy ***** who shouldn't even be doing what they were doing anyway. Even as far as streets go, yes there maybe rubbish sweepers, but they should be there to pick up what bits there are by accident, not stuff there because people are lazy and selfish.

This is just an extension of the rude and bad attitude of so many people these days, and what is wrong with this country. How is it so difficult for people to just have some basic manners and respect...?

the lack of litter bins is a legacy of the "troubles" as the IRA used them as bomb repositories, so they were removed from town centres

And yet, politicians seem to think that the general public want to "save the earth" and "protect the environment".....the general public doesn't care.

Nannying socialist governments have removed personal-responsibilty from many European countries. The general public expect for some-one else to take care of everything for them.

A sad state of affairs.

I was outside at work last week, and casually watching the cars drive past, a woman who was hoovering her car just picked up a bit of litter from her car and threw it on the floor, right in front of the bin

I stood there in disbelief when she turned around, noticed i had saw what she did, so she then picked it back up and put it in the car

Her husband walks around to the other side of the car so they switch places, husband sees litter in the car, picks it up and THROWS IT ON THE ****ING FLOOR

Couldnt help myself at this point, i had just been around the site picking up the fecking litter, so i walked over and had a word with him.

"Excuse me mate, theres no need to throw the litter on the floor, you are parked infront of the bin?"
(embarrassed) "ohh im sorry, i never realised"

Family of clampit-tramps.

Some of the beaches here In Cornwall are an absoloute dump, you have crap being washed ashore. and you have the tourists dumping *** buts, dog crap, glass bottles galore just left.
This is where the great unemployed could come in handy imo, round up a minibus or 10 and set them to work one day a week picking up rubbish on the beaches and streets. They are contributing something back to society and still have 6 days a week to look for work. And the4 council save money on rip off private waste contractors. Win win
Of course the liberals would never allow this, as they would see it as the unemployed being "punished" rather than them working towards earning their benefits, and instilling some self respect in them at the same time.

My mate made me laugh once, he runs a car wash identical to mine in a neighbouring town, some young charva type came blasting onto his site, pulled up outside for a car wash, so my mate went out to serve him, scroate type also wanted a new magic tree air freshener, my mate goes to pick him up a new air freshener, walks back outside and the young scroate gets all his old fresheners and throws them on the floor at my mates boots

Shouldn't laugh, but my mate was wound up so much i couldn't help it, it is a constant problem, we all hate picking up other peoples litter, i opened up the wash this morning and found dumped air freshener wrappers inside the wash, so somebody's bought one, and rather then dump it outside where they may be seen, they have dumped it while going through the wash

Had a chap come mthrough once, his passenger (a woman) was sitting still with a cheeseburger in her hand, one bite taken, but she was not eating it, it must have been horrible? i knew what was going to happen so i kept an eye on her, near the end of the wash she wound the window down and threw it of the fooken tiles just after the roof blower

I was fuming, so i ran threw and picked it up, then threw it of her car

Not the most professional approach, but **** em, ****en clampits

@Micky. I can just see you doing that. That's the beauty of running your own gaff. May not be professional, but I bet it got the message across.

It also boils my p1ss when I see chavs walking home from the supermarket with trolleys, when they get near their destination they just dump them in a hedge/ stream or in the middle of the road I have seen the police drive past these ******* many a time yet they do nothing, Surely it is theft? Our local asda even sends people out now to collect the discarded trolleys.
