Oscars, Halle ?

i thought her speech - the bit i was unlucky enought to see on the news - was excruciatingly histrionic. Embarrassing to watch. I went to bed to be spared the full horror on the actual show itself.
She should have taken a cue from Sidney Poitier's dignified speech.

Poitier was certainly more dignified, and perhaps Halle was a little OTT in what she was trying to say. Unfortunately society is such that what Halle and Denzil (sp?) achieved are to be seen as a breakthrough for the Afro-American race. In this day and age they both should have been able to accept their Oscars just like any other actors/actresses, but that is not the case and they probably have to work twice as hard to a) breakthrough into Hollywood, and b) be recognised by the public and the establishments.

Disco - very well said! I have alot of afro-american friends and even in this day and age in a normal working environment they seem to be suppressed. It's not of personal opinion on their part, I've seen it myself. I'm actually dating a Nigerian guy and see now why 'coloured' people sometimes have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. It's amazing the thoughts and comments people still have towards them. Bravo to Halle and Denzel..... they both deserved their Oscars!

Most significant was when she was sitting down and then heard her name called.
She was in total shock as she thought [maybe expected] to be passed over. The acceptance [its gonna haunt her] was a natural progression.
My only gripe is that she gets an oscar after she went bare-chested in swordfish. Something a woman with her talent should never have done.
Remembeer though, it was a first and hopefully it will open the doors of recognition for those in her, and Denzels footsteps.

Damn, I reckon she deserves the oscar just for baring that awesome pair of breasts - utter perfection. IIRC she charged an additional $50k just for that short scene.
As for Denzel Washington - what on earth do people see in this guy? Pretty much every film Ive seen him in hes been some do gooder who has such high morales. The Siege being by far the worst example. The only film of his I can genuinly say I enjoyed was the Bone Collector.
