I'll be watching this thread with interest. I'm on my fourth replacement HD box since the end of November.
Apparently my call to Sky today has been escalated twice and I'll be getting a call back from someone with a clue later.

A friend of mine was talking about something similar, I think he said it was called Eurovox ?
This system only worked on Virgin and required you to subscribe to the basic package to get everything.
He decided against it as a few people were having problems since Virgin brought out new viewing cards.

Yep if its the box that I am thinking off then whatever you do dont buy one, funny enough was in the national papers this very week off how the sellers off these things are trying everything to get rid off them without advising buyers that the good times are over !!! ie. encryption has been made so secure that free channels using these boxes are a thing off the past now.

The OP is referring to cardsharing. My opinion is don't bother 2 reasons sky are pretty quick to stamp this stuff out the other is it's illegal.

It depends how it is sold and by whom. I'm sure it can be sold as a DivX player or similiar, but it certainly can't be sold explicitly to rip off Sky.
Where are you buying it from? The subscription seems odd. Most places I've seen will sell you the box, hand you a linux manual and wish you luck ...

The subscription you will be paying for is access to a card sharing server, that's where the net connection comes in.
The price you have been quoted is a little high, a friend of mine who has this system pays around £50 for 6 months.
Dreamboxes are basically small factor PCs running Linux, be careful of which one you buy as there are cheep imitations ones from China. They do the same thing but are of a lower standard and arnt covered by the warrentry.

Reading about them they aren't a quick fix and require some knowledge and tinkering with your dish and the box itself.
If its to be used through cable forget it, Nagravision 3 is on its way and Virgin shares will rocket

The trouble with card-sharing through subscriptions to card share servers is that the owner can bugger off whenever they feel like it, leaving you out of pocket.
Other than that, you need to set up your own card sharing server and get people to subscribe to that. Though that means you need the server and the cards to start with and that's not even mentioning the hassle of setting the things up.
