unless you use cardsharing, Basicly you connect your dreambox to the internet and configure it to use a server (basicly another dreambox with a vaild skycard/sub or any of the other satcard subs) it then decodes the channels localy (i.e you still need normal sat dish) using the encryption keys from the server card (and updates them as needed when they change).
Highly illegal
Highly illegal

Please do not discuss card sharing on these forums.
Card sharing is Illegal.
You can discuss Dreamboxes to your hearts content though as they are perfectly legimate recievers for both free and (legal) subscription based satelite and DVB-T transmissions. (Dreamboxes can be used as an alternative to a sky reciever, as long as you've met the T&Cs of your agreement in your Sky contract - check the small print, namely the phone line).
To recap:
Dreambox: legal
Card sharing: Illegal

Re the phone line.
Despite what sky will tell you, you DO NOT!!!! need to have a phone line connected for the term of your contract.
You simply state at the start of your contract you wish to pay the one off fee that removes the requirement of the unit being connected to the phone line..
It was £25 when we did it

Yes that is right in SOME cases. But most people do sign up for the one year interactive user discount, which mean the phone line has to be connected for one year.
Which is why I said to check the small print
If you never entered into that agreement, or it has expired or you cease the contractual agreement you can unplug it.
Similar issue with multi-room, although I can't remember the small print off hand.
