Saving Private Ryan
It's on CH4 now.
I've never seen it before and I am dumb struck by the first 30mins.
Not a bit of wonder my Grandad didn't talk about the Army

I'm looking forward to the new one about the war in the Pacific.
My Grandad, at 96, has only just started talking about his experiences in the last couple of years. He was a radio operator in Churchills and then Shermans through North Africa then up through Italy, apparently he survived having 8 or 9 tanks shot from under him

BoB is a must-see ! 10 hours of brilliance. SPR fades off after the D-Day landing IMHO, whereas BoB keeps plunging you back into action right 'til the last two episodes which become sombre '9-Why We Fight' and heart-wrenching '10-Points'. '6-Bastogne' is amazing with DTS surround (US R1 DVD set), as is '2-Day of Days' with the assault at Brécourt. I hope 'The Pacific' is at least as good :

Saving Private Ryan is a film that for me was all about seeing it once and once only. It was fantastic but i know i'll never watch it again.
Band Of Brothers on the other hand is a complete masterpiece. Like all war films made by the Americans it has some Americanisms throughout it but they can be overlooked.

watched it in 98 when i was in school learning about the landings etc, went on a trip and walked the same beaches and memorial grounds as shown on that film. a trip ill never forget and always made me think twice as long about what our lads etc, went through...

SPR doesn't, but BoB does. The missuse was a blubbering wreck when they summarise how all their lives evolved after the war, and the stone in my stomach when they enter the concentration camp

It's ridiculous when you read that they considered dropping WWII from History lessons in secondary school. imo every school should have a copy of BOB.
As with SPR BOB is great through 5.1
As others have said I'm also looking forward to Pacific.

In all fairness, SPR is a (semi) fictional movie and has to appeal to an audience in a 2 hours or so slot.
BOB is a real account of what happened to Easy Company and has 10 hours to show you so much more and develop the characters.
Each are brilliant in their own right for what they tried to achieve.
I have high hopes for the Pacific!
