Saving Private Ryan

It's on CH4 now.

I've never seen it before and I am dumb struck by the first 30mins.

Not a bit of wonder my Grandad didn't talk about the Army :(

Band of Brothers = Awesome :thumb:

I have high hopes for "The Pacific" coming to Sky Movies on March 14th from the same folk that brought us Band of Brothers! :norty:

HBO: The Pacific: Homepage

Trout 28 February 2010 09:56 PM

Band of Brothers is magnificent, much better than Saving Private Ryan.

DYK 28 February 2010 09:58 PM

Pitty Monte Casino never really gets a mention in ww2 films etc was just as brutal,my uncle les was in the paras and got dropped there.Died in 1978 so never met him but my old man told me all about him, showed me pics and some medals etc...

Test the quality of your home cinema surround sound with the first 30 mins of Saving Private Ryan.
You'll wonder who's shooting at you.
Amazing sound.

I agree :thumb:

I'm looking forward to the new one about the war in the Pacific.

My Grandad, at 96, has only just started talking about his experiences in the last couple of years. He was a radio operator in Churchills and then Shermans through North Africa then up through Italy, apparently he survived having 8 or 9 tanks shot from under him

BoB is a must-see ! 10 hours of brilliance. SPR fades off after the D-Day landing IMHO, whereas BoB keeps plunging you back into action right 'til the last two episodes which become sombre '9-Why We Fight' and heart-wrenching '10-Points'. '6-Bastogne' is amazing with DTS surround (US R1 DVD set), as is '2-Day of Days' with the assault at Brécourt. I hope 'The Pacific' is at least as good :notworthy:

;)

Saving Private Ryan is a film that for me was all about seeing it once and once only. It was fantastic but i know i'll never watch it again.

Band Of Brothers on the other hand is a complete masterpiece. Like all war films made by the Americans it has some Americanisms throughout it but they can be overlooked.

Jamie 28 February 2010 11:23 PM

Seen it more times than i can care to remember classic film :)

WRX_Dazza 28 February 2010 11:28 PM

good bit of tank action coming up now ;)

mattyd 28 February 2010 11:32 PM

watched it in 98 when i was in school learning about the landings etc, went on a trip and walked the same beaches and memorial grounds as shown on that film. a trip ill never forget and always made me think twice as long about what our lads etc, went through...

Lee247 28 February 2010 11:40 PM

I've never had any fancy to watch it. May have to give it a go after those comments :)

Jamie 28 February 2010 11:43 PM

Sad ending Mrs 38of 267 :(

mattyd 28 February 2010 11:56 PM

put it on now t c the graceful p51!

BoB is much better than Saving Private Ryan

belliott69 01 March 2010 01:26 AM

brilliant movie and i am so looking foward to the pacific.

stedee 01 March 2010 02:22 AM

bob is good but it aint better than spr - no way is it. nearly makes my cry -lol

corradoboy 01 March 2010 02:31 AM

SPR doesn't, but BoB does. The missuse was a blubbering wreck when they summarise how all their lives evolved after the war, and the stone in my stomach when they enter the concentration camp :(

Funkii Munkii 01 March 2010 04:02 AM

It's ridiculous when you read that they considered dropping WWII from History lessons in secondary school. imo every school should have a copy of BOB.

As with SPR BOB is great through 5.1

As others have said I'm also looking forward to Pacific.

Geezer 01 March 2010 07:54 AM

In all fairness, SPR is a (semi) fictional movie and has to appeal to an audience in a 2 hours or so slot.

BOB is a real account of what happened to Easy Company and has 10 hours to show you so much more and develop the characters.

Each are brilliant in their own right for what they tried to achieve.

I have high hopes for the Pacific!

Geezer

A great series, the dvd box set is now less than £30.00 in some shops, worth the money. Each episode (does not do the justice each episode is a film in itself) of BoB has an intro by one or two of the real soliders who fought in ww2

Private Ryan - i still watch the assault on the beach in silence, it never ceases to move me.

Zavvi, HMV and Amazon are all IRO £15 for DVD with BD just £18 or so.
