I'm applying for a job, first time in 20 years!
I have to complete a section - Criminal convictions
how far does this go back, in my late teens 20 years ago I had a altercation with the police!

You're applying for a job? First time in 20 years? You have a criminal record? It was an altercation with the police?
What did you do exactly to get 20 years? Murder a copper?

just found this -
Information relating to convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings for recordable offences is retained on the Police National Computer (PNC). In accordance with the ACPO Retention Guidelines such information is retained for 100 years. After this time the police will delete the record.

Depends on the 'sort' of job you are applying for. Are they going to do a CRB check? in which case they will see your conviction[s] and you will be better off declearing it. If they are not doing a CRB check then you can, as above regard it as 'spent' and not declare it.
Only know this as i had to take a stop gap job 6 months ago and i did not declear any of my previous, the CRB came back 'as long as your arm' and i still got the job

I would declare it - put some covering words like, "Please note the date" and run with it.
They will probably give you a lot of credit for your honesty - the rest of your CV will raise up in credibility

Depends on the job mate - if it is a government post or any job where you need to be vetted, failure to declare any offence which later comes to light will be viewed as an integrity issue.
I would strongly advise you to declare it, it is a relatively minor offence, and occurred 10 years ago. If you are being vetted you are required to declare the offence whether spent or not.
Best of luck with the selection process.

Looks like a very helpful bit of information from NotRev. If there is any doubt it is usually best to be upfront about everything. It was a very long time ago anyway. Doubt they would be very concerned about it and may instead give you points for being honest.

Yes - depends on the job.
As posted above - if its government linked and you'll be vetted then you have to declare it.
Happened to a guy at work - he forgot about something which had happened about 12 years ago
Some places we work for are high security government and you get vetted - he was refused clearance

dont say 'owt.
chances are the old bill will have left the data on a laptop on the train somewhere and it has since been formatted by some chav fence and sold on for £20 in the pub.
don't give anyone an excuse NOT to employ you in this day and age.
afterall it just sounds like a misdemeaner and not a crime of the century !!!
good luck with the application

*****!!!
Look mate forget the rest unless it is a policeman spouting the ballicks they learn. I was convicted of fraud when I was 24, I am now 40 and a nurse in an A&E dept in Edinburgh. I got charged with fraud due to a **** I thought was a mate dumped credit cards he had on him in the car during a stop by the police, as it was my car and nobody owned up I got charged, as you do I kept my mouth shut and the now ex mate payed my fine, With the introduction of the Disclosure system by the Gov, you only have to tell them about any convictions not spent under the Convictions Act, it sounds like you had the charge years ago so it is spent, you will only have to legaly say if you need an enhanced disclosure which will list everything down to you picking your nose, lol. Even with the above mentioned I would just say as I did, I was out of order and had a few and got a charge, I suppose I deserved it at the time I was out of order, it has no bearing on who I am now. If you are honest and upfront then most employers will not give a hoot as long as you are willing to do the job and are on time. I was honest and was given the chance, no matter what the charge if they want to give you the chance they will do. Best of luck with the job mate!!!
