And more than 50% of MPs had to pay back *overpaid* expenses. Flash had to pay back more than £12K!!!! Apparently that was 40% of the total that had to be repaid by the whole cabinet. So you can see where his financial acumen comes from ....
As for those charged, get them thrown in jail!

As for the parties involved, the Peer is a Tory, 3 MP's are Labour.
All up on multiple charges, so here is hoping at least one charge per person sticks. And that they dont get a golden payoff when they quit before the next election.
I would like to see custodial sentances for any of them found guilty.

Custodial sentences? Unlikely, especially when Jaquie Spliff got told SHE could keep the £100,000+ SHE allegedly swindled the taxpayer out of, provided she apologised to the house.
One of the TRULY stupid things, though, is that the ENQUIRY has cost £1.2M and only £1.12M will be paid back
£1.2M for an enquiry? Where has all THAT dosh gone?

Fraud is fraud when you get caught, they should be prosicuted to the full extent of the law as a common man would be without any favours and regardless of party or status.
If use the common folk tried that we would be doing a 5 stretch....

These enquiries take the biscuit when it comes to the cost of it all. Wait for the next enquiry to be into the cost of the enquiry!

I am just sorry that they have only had 6 in mind. All those who overclaimed must have known they were effectively cheating and stealing money that they were not morally entitled to.
There is no way that they can ever enjoy the trust of the electorate any more and in that situation they should be given the bum's rush and we should be able to elect totally new MP's.
All this repayment and court cases will not restore the respect of the electorate.

Never a truer word spoken. Technically the benefits system is there to exploit too, difference is we dont place our trust in most of the people claiming benefits, so in that respect the MP's are WORSE, especially considering most of them took the extra money out of pure greed and not to improve their lifestyle from crap to just sewage.

As for a £1.2m investigation to recover £1.12m - yes in the short term it is not ideal, but the fall out will be a better expenses system and less money claimed so the nat gain for the tax payer will increase with time
