The iPad, filling a non existant gap in the market?
Not read too much about it yet, but hearing things via Facebook etc.
10" screen, usual touch interface, running iPhone OS 3.2, no 3G, no Flash, $499
I am NOT knocking it (yet) but just wondered what function and purpose it serves. Seeing as I cant find too much on it yet, im confuddled.
Looks all singing, all dancing though.

Aaaah I stand corrected already.
Its released in variants, starting at $499 for the 16g non 3G and rising to $800 ish for the 64g 3G
Paul, from what I understand it runs iPhone software and is not particularly geared up for operating as a "PC" style machine.
Much smaller HD etc, so im guessing its somewhere inbetween.

Steve Jobs uncloaks the 'iPad' ? The Register
DailyTech - Apple Delivers Sleek iPad, Starts from $499
"... States Apple CEO Steve Jobs, "It’s so much more intimate than a laptop." ..."
Hmmm.
Apple unveils $499 tablet with AT&T data plans - Yahoo! News
"... CEO Steve Jobs says the iPad will be better for reading books, playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone. ..."
Books - yep, I read them. They're paper - and much smaller than the iPad.
Playing games - only games I play aren't for the iPad ...
Video - watch the TV/DVD/Video.
Guess they're trying to start something here. But not sure what ....

Oooh found more.
We've got a large iPhone looking device with a 9.7-inch IPC LED screen
1Ghz Apple A4 processor
Full capacitive multitouch screen
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, but no mention of a SIM-card slot
Comes complete with a compass, accelerometer, speaker and microphone
The iTunes, App Store, Contacts, iPhoto and Calendar applications have been given an iPad friendly aesthetic overhaul
It weighs 1.5lbs and is just 0.5-inches thick
It has a ten-hour battery life, which is boosted to one month in standby mode
It comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flash memory models
It does not appear to be Flash-ready
For the 3G models, you'll need to add $130.
So that's $629 for the 16GB
$729 for the 32GB
$829 for the top end 64GB 3G mod

It's a Mac version of a Tablet PC.
Tablets have been around for a few years but the take-up of them has been slow. They're pretty niche when it comes to application in a business context with things like plug in engine diagnostic, portable medical assistant, etc. Just a larger, more powerful version of a PDA/HHC.

I thought tablet PC's had full PC functionality thought? Could be wrong, never looked into them really.
UK prices will of course be higher than even the dollar equiv lol.
Just still a little confused about it. A giant iPhone, with some extra memory and a bigger screen. But not about to replace your laptop, or your TV, PC, iPhone....
Like you say Dave, they are starting something but god knows what.
All that said, I would love a play with one.
But I have to say its like watching an advert for Ariel or Daz... Every time is "best ever" But before the next one, the old one was the bollox.
Everyone loves the iPhone for its HUGE screen, suitable for watching movies on etc.....
But NOW..... You see what I mean ? lol

Oh hang on, its just a keyboard for the iPad lol.
Good idea though. But surely it should have MacBook features and OS if you can dock it like that.

there's a couple of cheaper and better specced units due for release over the next quarter in the states. Can't remember the names of them off the top of my head but do recall one of them being priced at around $200 with 3g, gps, wifi etc.
Saying that, the apple unit will undoubtedly have a better touch/feel build quality to it and probably a nicer gui than the cheaper units.

Wierd that when it docks, its apparently in portrait though. Surely landscape would have been better?

I seem to remember Sony filling a totally non-existent gap in the market with the Walkman.
Then Apple exploiting that gap and selling 250m iPods!!!
And having been criticised for slow iPhone sales they sold 8.7m in three months to Christmas.
Whatever you say about them - they can create markets!

I'm driving across S.Africa right now with my iPhone for company, a bigger screen would be so good. iPhone OS is incredible, game changing in fact, scaling thing up is once again moving things along nicely.
The SDK has now been opened to allow telephony over 3g, that's the phone sorted.

Honest question though, where is its place in the market in your opinion.?
Does it replace something, or just bridge a gap.
Its interesting watching some of the news channels following the reveal. Some love it, some think its just an iPhone on steroids.
Trout I dont disagree with that at all, in fact, very good point. However. Who do you feel it will appeal to and where do you see it being used?
Personally I cant picture people carrying them about the streets and using them on buses and trains. So im thinking more a home/office enviroment. But then surely thats where you have your main PC/Mac/laptop ?
For me, the screen for public use is almost a flaw. Sit on a train and watch people using their devices, and you always see other people watching what they are doing. Thing is if its messages etc, they can rarely see the screen close enough to read them. Where as with a laptop/netbook or now iPad you can. Personally I dont like that.

Thats just wrong lol
But one of the reviews I was reading did say "it has a rather sticky screen". At first glance I didn't read anything more into it..... but now!
Seriously though, its statements like Jobs made that maybe explain why I dont get their products. I dont feel a part of a device quite like that.
