What are planning regs re sky dish? Calling Saxo Boy!
Hi all,
I am planning to get sky installed, thing is I live in a conservation area. I think the dish will need to go on the front of the house.
Can anyone shed any light on what the planning situation is? The house opposite has one but the old style so must have been up for a long time. I dont want to get it installed and find out I cant have a dish in a conservation area.
I'm sure I have seen something before that it may be against planning.
Cheers,
Chop

There may be a restrictive covenant in the deeds (if it's a fairly new house), mine says I can only have a dish on the rear of the house which should not be visible from the front.

Thanks Midlife. It is a 1900ish house so nothing in the deeds.
Think I may be buggered if it has to go on the back. Will sky come out and check to see if it will go on the back?

It needs to be on a heading of 148 degrees for Sky so you could find out for yourself with a compass. The direction of the other one near you will give the clue of course.
If there are no local planning restrictions on Sky dishes you might just as well get it installed as unobtrusively as possible and keep stumm about it. Its not that big an aerial.
An extra tip is to give it a coat of waxoyl to stop it going rusty as they all do. The waxoyl will not affect the signal in any way. I have done that to two dishes in the past so I know it works. Not necessary of course to put it on the LNB.
I also installed one in my friend's garden on a pole.

That's a good point, surely if the house opposite you has one on the front, then for them to point in the same direction then it would need to go on the back of yours. Or isn't it that simple?

Thanks for input. I will get my compass out now and check the heading.
It does make sense that if the house opposite is on the front mine should be on the back, but as always it isnt as simple as that. The houses aren't exactly level (victorians weren't that great at setting out houses ), the one opposite pretty much points down the street but there is a building down the road on my side that would block the line of signal at the back but not at the front.
Might give sky a call. think they are going to have to come out but no doubt they will charge.

Yes you will need a clear shot on that heading,it can be a bit of a nuisance the way the houses are laid out at times. The way to assess a clear look is to imagine the dish as looking like a torchbeam the same diameter of the dish in a straight line.

i have just installed a screwfix £40 freesat dish used this site for direction of dish etc
Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com
just punch in your postcode and it will show your house and which direction to point the dish on google maps so you can see if any objects like trees etc are in the way by zooming out and and looking at the picture

forget where the dish is situated - front, back, side -- irrelevant
it is where it is pointing that counts – nothing else
the signal received has no idea what part of the house the dish is installed on – only what way the dish is pointing
