Scoobynet Movie of the Year
OK then Scoobynet movie fans, what is your favourite movie of the year and why?
For me it is District 9.
Great story told with originality. Powerful message told with pathos (unlike the chick movie, tree huggy moments in Avatar). Special effects enghanced the film in a simple way, rather than defined the film as in Avatar.
Other special mention goes to Inglourious Basterds for best performance and Avatar for 3D special effects.
So what was your favourite in a record year for British Cinema.

Toss up between 'Let the right one in' and 'Moon'
Let the right one in just nudges it for me - a fantatstically atmospheric movie that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Genuinely jumpy and yet without the gore and effects that seem to be a necessity for so many horror movie makers these days.
Moon was a perfectly paced slow burner of a science fiction movie that used visuals just as much as dialogue to let the story unfold. Very well made and well acted throughout.

I have seen nothing yet worth the accolade. Zombieland was quite good but not worth film of the year.

I watched 'Law Abiding Citizen' last night and I have to say it was one of the best films I have watched for a while.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
It was fresh and had a few tricks up it's sleeve, but it didn't get lost in all the Hollywood lets all blow stuff up and make it look pretty crap.
I'd give it a 9/10.

District 9 was average at best. It was all hyped up as this intelligent, original sc fi, but was just a let down. Full of holes.
1) Why did the aliens come here?
2) Why did they make no effort to go back?
3) That 'liquid' was some kind of fuel right. Why would it turn you into a prawn?
4) Their numbers started of at approx 1 million. They did say in the film that illness had meant either their leaders had died or just become 'stupid'
Are you trying to tell me, that a species intelligent enough to attain space travel, could not muster one prawn in 30 years to organise them?
5) The arms company had 30 years to play with the prawn weapons, they really couldn't figure out a way to reverse engineer the important bits? Especially as you can bribe a prawn with a can of cat food.
6) Where was that Chakrabarty ladyboy from Liberty fighting for the rights of the prawns???
Best films for me where
1) 50 dead men walking. British film about the IRA
2) The International
Otherwise a fairly bad year for good films.

1) The drifted here - given a choice do you honestly think they'd choose SA to settle?
2) They didn't know how until one of them worked it out.
3) Its alien so could do anything.
4) The ones that were left were the workers of the species. They didn't know anything about space travel. It took nearly 30 years for one of them to work it out.
5) Woul you rather they just hacked into them like Will Smith did with Windows 98?
6) ???

Also, they didn't give the main character any anaesthetic because they didn't know how prawns would react, but they had been experimenting on the prawns for 30 years, surely they would have tested this already?
Just very average, not worthy of the hype

Just finished watching Hurt Locker.
Enjoyed it more than Jarhead - a great film that captures at least the essence of the horror of being posted in Iraq.
Worthy of so many BAFTAs (and probably Oscars) I am not quite so sure. Very good but not great!

Really enjoyed Hurt Locker, one of the most tense films I've seen in ages and some great performances.
It was really great to see Cameron's face at the Baftas when his ex wife beat him to the best film award
Personally I think its been a bad year for films, I haven't seen Law abiding citizen yet though

I didn't think the Hurt Locker was that good to be honest - the whole premise of the devil-may-care bomb disposal guy as just too Hollywood, and there were loads of unrealistic parts - like the squad moving around in just one Humvee when in reality no less than four gun trucks would be at any given situation. And the ridiculous sniper part was just laughable as was Ralph Fiennes character. They would've been better keeping Guy Pearce in as the main protagonist instead of blowing him up in the first 5 mins.
One of the best films for me of last year was 'Up' which I watched with my daughter & then ended up buying on DVD so I could watch it again. Fantastic film & truly something that can be enjoyed by all the family. Other films worth a mention definitely The Hangover as best comedy of the year, and The Road for its unrelenting bleakness and top performance by Viggo Mortensen.

I was completely underwhlemed by Avatar. Just cause it utilised 3D the best way so far doesn't make the actual story any better.
Most of the time I felt like I was watching a CGI film (bare with me...) where as at least with his Titantic film the effects looked like they were 'real'.

Agreed, it wasn't a perfect movie. It did manage a level of tension though that I don't often experience.
I've been to Blockbuster's three times to get UP but they've always been all out.
