Depends what other inputs the TV has. It is unlikely that any DVD recorder will have a UHF modulator in it to send its output to the TV through an aerial lead.
If the TV has a composite video or S-Video input then you're in with a fighting chance.
That said any TV without a SCART connection must be pretty old, I had my first TV with a SCART in the eighties! Perhaps it is time to upgrade, especially as basic LCD screens can be had for a few Ł100 and will probably have several SCARTs, component, HDMI, etc.

it would be easier to buy a seperate rf modulator (scart input with scart output AND rf output) and fit it to any DVD recorder with a scart out. Keene Electronics
although if used without a looped through scart feed, it will need a 75ohm scart plug
Keene Electronics
about Ł40-ish for the two.

OK guys , many thanks for input.
Anyway I went to Currys and bought one with a view to changing TVs around if I needed to.
I got a National Panasonic with hard drive for around Ł230 which seemed an OK price. I looked at the back of machine and asked what all the connections were for. The guy pointed to a few and told me they were use whan connecting to a TV without a Scart output This from the same shop whose "technical" guy had said that I can only use a TV with a Scart. So what hope is there for people like me who don't even know what SCART stands for
Thanks Chip. I have identified a Halfords shop in Dublin (where car is) and I will get my boy to sort the radio out with them
