Went to see it tonight - cinema not as busy as expected. About a third full.

An amazing visual experience - completely immersive environment - the detail is incredible. The 3D is also fantastic.

The story is a bit tree huggy chick movie with a bit of Aliens thrown in in the final third.

Well worth spending an evening on.

Saw it at IMAX this aft and was blown away. The story is indeed a blend of Tarzan, Emerald Forest with some Aliens action thrown in, but the visuals are astounding in places. The 2 3/4 hours passed very quickly and I will be seeing it again, definitely. Having heard lots of poor comments on the way 3D is displayed at 'normal' cinemas, I'll be paying through the nose for IMAX again, probably in the new year once the kids are back at school and the hysteria dies down.

I genuinely think that once big directors start to embrace 3d and create films with that in mind we will look on 2d the same as people look at black and white.

Having watched a few 3D films recently I don't see the need. Although Avatar was brilliant, it could have been almost as good in 2D. After 20-30 minutes I seem to forget about the 3D and just get into the story and action. It was the same with Harry Potter recently. The first 20 minutes in IMAX 3D, then back to 2D. It was disappointing at first, but overall it simply didn't matter. Christmas Carol was another, with amazing detail and 3D depth, but I think it would be almost the same spectacle without the gimmick. I certainly see no need to get 3D in the house, and I love my AV gadgets !

To me a great analogy is Pixar. They have brought animation into the centre of critical movies. And yet in spite of their technical brilliance in animation, the real differentiator is the quality of the story.

Avatar will be remembered as a brilliant technical movie; a breakthrough. It will not be remembered as a classic in the same way as Toy Story.

You can't beat IMAX 3D. Always like their Documentaries they show (Deep Sea 3D & Grand Cnyon) as they throw you into the scenary. Went to see 'Up' and 'Ice age 3D' at the standard cinema and it lacked something over the IMAX 3D. Watched the new Superman film at the IMAX a few years back and that too only had certain parts in 3D but it was really good. Roll-on 3D films! Hopefully hologram technology will evolve

The great thing about the 3D in Avatar was that you could forget that it was a 3D movie. Because it wasn't laden with cheap standard 3D effects, it just became an utterly immersive experience.

The film itself I could take or leave (though I've got to get one of those walkers for my morning commute to work) but the overall feeling when I left the cinema was that yes, this was a worthwhile experience...

Went to see this tonight, was absolutely gobsmacked, it may not be to every ones taste but I loved it. Special effects/3D very good too, whatever happened to the bit of cardboard with one red and one green eye.

Go see it.....

I went to see it in 3D on Monday night.

Awesome

OK, so the plot is not particularly original, but it was more interesting than I thought it would be and I was drawn into it pretty well. But the visuals are what really made this movie. The 3D was both subtle and impressive. The world of Pandora was brilliantly rendered. I particularly liked the first trip into the jungle. It's not going to be to everyone's taste, but it's the first film I've seen in 20+ years where I really want to go back and watch this one again at the cinema. I'm just not sure if it will work when it goes to Blu-Ray/DVD (one for Blu-Ray I think) in 2D only, but will probably end up getting it to keep.

Saw it last night and thought it was fantastic! Can't imagine seeing that sort of movie now not in 3D. Anything like LOTR's coming out now that isn't in 3D just wouldn't cut it.

I liked the actual movie too - not original, but still engrossing and quite moving in parts.

you have to buy them -- about 3 quid -- but reusable

we have 3, I think my wife had previoulsy bought them for another movie

so I just took those along -- they are "proper" glasses not the rubbish paper ones

That'll be because Avatar is a digitally projected movie that uses polarised light.

This still uses good old fashioned red/blue glasses technology like you get free with BD 3D films.

im a bit disapointed that i cant watch 3d films. partially sighted in the one eye makes it kinda hard for me watching them.

i have noticed mind that some films in 3d use different colour lenses in the glasses, i have a few pairs and some are red and blue and the ones we had for a movie were green and more of a pink rather than red.

i so want to watch in 3d just dont know if it will work for me.

I went on opening weekend to it in 3D, and liked it so much I dragged my mother and gramps 60miles to see it at the Imax Yday. Far better, and It has now gone on to beat dambusters as my grandfathers favorite film!!!!.

So there you go, if an 86yr old stuck in the mud likes it, everyone should!!!.

the last film i seen with 3D init was Nightmare on Elm Street Have to say the adverts or reviews online haven't made me want to see this film at all. It looks quite rubbish for a film but great for a video sequence in a computer game. Not really convinced on 3D either, it doesn't really seem needed in my opinion to tell a story.
