I want to check if the phone ive just bought is unlocked, all my mates are on the same network as me so i can`t test one of their cards, i could alays stop a stranger in the street and ask them what provider they use and can i test their SIM on my phone

Can you get a free SIM card from companies like orange and 02 etc ?

Depends what phone. Some have service menu's and you can see the if the phone is restricted or not.
You can still get free sim's on most providers sites, but you'll have to wait for them.
