Might get boring quickly just burning about on your own - plus finding somewhere to use the thing properly.
If your looking for something to soak up your Sundays and chew money faster than a real car I can thoroughly recommend RC car racing.

Twin honda engine 4/ are heavy and not that quick plus you have 2 motors to look after.
Look for Rotax Max they are quick and fairly reliable.
If they out of your price range look for a TKM Extreme 2/ but make sure you get one with a clutch and starter they are a pain in the **** if you have to start it on your own without a clutch

Steer clear of the Pro Karts
Something like a 100cc or 125cc kart at the very most would be ample for you.
Have you a local club you could go to?
You might find that those guys will know of someone selling, and most likely have been well looked after also.
Maybe even a test first
I'd guess once you get a crack on a 100cc kart that'll be more than enough for you.
I'll tell you this - 70mph with your **** inches from the ground feels lighting quick and gets there in no time at all.

A track is exactly what you need
I used to take mine to a local track.
I also used to race it up and down the road
From my old house I took it about 800 yards down the road to one of those painted roundabouts and back again.
Was a right laugh and thankfully cops never saw me and the neighbours didn't mind as I didn't do that very often.

Ahhh,im just about to get back into it too.
Id recommend the TKM 4 stroke.
A few years back i used to play on a TKM 2 stroke.....2 stroke have the most power for your CC (18hp)but they really are a hassel to keep going.
The carb's are soooo small and always getting blocked and they need a rebuild every 6-15hrs.
The rotax are the same, but even faster and more expensive to run(28hp)
The single engine ones you may have tried are 5.5hp 4 stroke and very slow.
The pro carts are just 2 of these engines and still a bit pathetic.
But the kart im getting is a 200cc 4 stroke TKM lump that has 19hp but service intervals of 50-100hrs...the perfect balance....and trust me,they feel quicker than any 500+ bhp scoob ive been in.
As for having a laugh of sundays..good plan.
You wont be bombing round on your own...all the tracks have normally 2-3 practice sat/sun a month and 1-2 race days.
Forget the race days..theres sooo many rules and regulations.
The practice days are great fun and you can play race against these great drivers without the need for constant kart scrutinering, pro raceware etc.
Its the best purest fun ive found and a great workout

Would love a spin in one of the super karts.
These use a 6 speed squential gearbox,95bhp,nearly 500bhp to the ton ratio inc driver(around 850bhp without)
0-60 in under 3 sec.170-190mph,100mph to zero in under 2 sec and hold many tracks lap records (inc F1......obviously tight tracks though)
Now THAT would be a buzz with your **** scrapping on the ground!

Yep,im paying £1200 for mine,so am sure you'd find one for that.
If you do find one,try and grab some bits with it...ie a stand(very much needed) spare tyres etc,if they have them.
You see, these things come up sometimes because someone wants to move up a level or wants to give it up.......these are the best deals to find as they want to sell the whole package and you can pick up everything you need at a cheap price.
Also when you go to these practice days, your see loads of stuff for sale like tyres.
Folks have a sort of 'car boot sale' out of there boot so you can pick up some bargains.
For example, tyres are at there best for maybe 1 or 2 races...after that they lose there edge.
Even though it may only be 0.5 of a second a lap, they sell them on as they have to remain competitive, and as the likes of us just want a laugh,we can pick up these fractionly slower tyres at one 5th the price new...

Also remember its good to have at least 3 sets of wheels.
4 slicks
4 wets
4 semi's.
Our weather can change at any time during a kart meeting and slicks in the rain = zero grip...worse than ice....

The TKM 4/ where very new when I raced the TKM 2/ Extremes I take it they have taken off?
Sadly when I moved to France I packed it in not much Karting happening in Brittany
Have recently found firearms are still allowed here so instead of karting I now fill my spare time learning to shoot and my next purchase will be a 9mm hand gun

Yes mate, really taken off and pretty much on a level playing field as 4 strokes as regards to popularity.

Must have been fun,lol
I remember back in the mid 90's we were all bombing round in the dry on slicks and my mate emptied a can of orange tango on 1 of the corners.
We were bumper to bumper,6 of us,hit the tango and all of us went straight into the tyres in perfect opposite lock formation.....

yeah the 4/ are 200cc the 2/ 100cc or 115cc for the Extreme
Think you will get a 2/ for much less then a 4/ probably keep it going for a few years with the difference
I never heard of an engine blowing when I raced 2/ KTM they are a very reliable engine and plenty of used ones around. (I did need a new carb mind)

Yep,as Rbaz says, thats the one and yes you would find a 2stroke cheaper.
As i dont know a great deal about engines i found the 2 stroke to much hard work where as the 4 stroke will be as reliable as your garden mower engine.
Your choice mate, but been down the 2 stroke route and didnt have the ability to work on it much and couldnt be done with the hassel of contant tweaking, cleaning zoorst insides after every meet, carb probs, etc.
So now would prefere forking out an extra £400 a save all the grief.
