A motoring enquiry / saving the children
Can anybody tell me why people put their right indicator on when taking a roadabout in full knowledge that they are destined for the first exit , and then at the very last second slap on the left indicator
- thus backing up people trying to enter the roadabout at the second entry
i suggest this is costing the nation millions .
and secondly i noticed people are MUCH more concerned now to keeep a constant speed ( no matter the speed limit)
- is this ACTUALLY an effort on the part of the oap/else to save some cash so as the progeny can afford a roof over head now that were in an economy based solely on what some 'anker in the city has decided to bet on this week

i have a theory about the "right indicator but turning left or going straight on" brigade, I think its a little "tip" passed on by a mother or father. The mum or dad tells there offspring when they start driving that if you put your right indicator on when ever you are about to go on a roundabout especially if you are in the left hand lane, it will confuse everyone and everyone will stay back and keep out of your way!

Can someone also tell me why people enter roundabouts from a right hand lane then cut right across both lanes and go straight over, nearly side swiping me?
Happens near enough daily.

It makes me so mad though, it gets so very very tempting to just continue with your manoeuvre and smash the side of their car in sometimes.
(I'd obviously never do that, but the thought has entered my head so many times)

giving way to people already on the roundabout (or from the right) is old hat -- apparently

i know what you mean, but if you are in the left hand lane , maybe they think you are taking the first exit (assuming the roundabout has 4 exits)
I must admit, I have been driving 25 years and I still get confused by were I am supposed to be (according to other motorists) on roundabouts
I seem to get continually caught by the fvcker approaching roundabout at 90mph and expecting a free passage through it

Absolute nonsense to use the indicators at all if you are leaving by the first exit. Your position in the left hand lane should give the clue anyway. If you have used the right indicator to show you mean to use a later exit then it is sensible to use the left indicator at that exit.

If a left or right indicator is flashing, what does it mean?

It means that the bulb is working. It means **** all else these days. Just ignore indicators and assume everyone will do the unexpected.

"... 186 Signals and position.
When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
- signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
- keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave
- signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
- keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
- signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want
- select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
- you should not normally need to signal on approach
- stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
- signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want
That way, by signalling for the left turn you can inform the person waiting to exit from that turn, or the next, that you are taking the exit and they can plan accordingly (obviously not trusting the indicator 100% as that would be daft ... ).
