Default Flying tomorrow: Sleeping tablets?

I'm flying off to Singapore tomorrow evening and as it is a night flight and such a long one (13 hours) I have just been to the doctors and got Zopiclone (sleeping tablets).

I haven't taken tablets before on a 'plane, is it a good idea? Anyone else done it?

Zopiclone is safer than most benzodiazepine based sleeping tablets so you should be ok.

Personally, Id be more interested in keeping active, rather than being immobile for thirteen hours...

True, especially when the plane ditches in the sea, much easier trying to cling on to that lifeboat when you are actually awake.

My concern would be deep vein thrombosis. I know someone that this happened to: she only survived because her younger sister was a student nurse and DVT was one of the subjects she was studying at uni at the time.

My brother nearly died from this a couple of years back, spent quite some time in hospital afterwards as well, he now has to give himself injections in his stomach before flying - nice.

Not worth the risk IMO.

As I assume you explained why you wanted them to your GP I would guess you should be OK.
Maybe take an aspirin if worried about DVT.
+ go business class.

Thanks for the replies.

DVT: Possibly ... but I don't move around very much on the plane anyway just a couple of strolls around during my (usual) trip to San Francisco.

Crashing: Mmmm ... I think I'd rather be blissfully unaware.

Business Class: Yes, used to do that. Not anymore sadly. Even though I'm only going to be there for two days.

Flight is at 9pm this evening, so if I don't post ever again its been fun!

My understanding Steve, is that those couple of strolls could make all the difference. Sarah doesnt have to inject herself, but she does take aspirin and wear surgical socks: and the airlines would all blacklist her if she admitted to having had a clot before...

Zopiclone can give a 'hangover' effect and a minging metallic taste in your mouth.

I found that as a passenger it was so boring that I always fell asleep anyway.

Worth getting some surgical socks for a long trip like that. Enjoy Singapore, great place

Flying at 2100, a few brandy and cokes and your body clock should kick in as per usual. I like to have my wits about me so sleepers are out for me

Enjoy your trip

Have taken zopiclone in the past week for the first time ever 2 x 3.5mg pills, having not slept for 4 nights due to illness. They seem to really dehydrate you as you sleep, waking up with a very dry lips, mouth and throat. As has alredy been stated, they leave a horrible metallic taste in your mouth also. I wont be taking them again.

My best ever flight was on Oxycodone...
I remained at the point of falling asleep, for most of the flight.

Would not recommend it, but the flight passed quickly.
I would rather get on the plane absolutly knackered, and just fall asleep naturally.

2 x Nytol tablets, a glass of milk and a fiesty **** used to knock me out cold for around 8 hours after a nightshift.

Just remember to put your tadger away before you fall asleep, or you might get kicked off the plane.

Well I'm here -- two glasses of wine and one tablet and slept for 7 hours. No side effects yet.

Just off to wander around the town.
