Model Steam Engines
Looking to buy a stationary model steam engine as a gift for xmas.
Something like a Wilesco or Mamod?
Unless there is any other make I should be aware of?
Anyone out there know where I can get something? Maybe in kit form?
I have found this, which looks like what I am after ... but I haven't seen it in real life (could be rubbish!) http://www.wilesco-steam.co.uk/images/d6.jpg
Where do you buy this kind of thing .... you don't see them on the High Street

Had a couple of Mamod engines, a static and a roller - great quality and a pleasure to run

Ive got a mate who had one of his dad as a wedding present, he didn't have to build it, but is it fairly massive, over half a meter easy.
Several K' by all accounts aswell and supposedly, will not lose money on it.

Out of interest what fuel is required? Tiny packs of coal? Serious question btw as I've only seen the larger models at country fairs. dl

I used to work in a shop that sold them. They run on solid fuel tablets, a bit like fire lighters. Mamod stuff is pretty good & they are good when it comes to spare parts.

One of the excitements I remember is when a Jetex motor comes out of its clip and chases you across the flying field! They dont half go when they don't have to push a plane any more.

^^^^ Yes, they are called generators :-)
I used to have a couple of these steam things when I was a boy, although both where steam tractors and I have a tool bench which was driven by the engine.
Lovely little things really, engineering was amazing. Used to love blowing the whistle, even if it did cost me some steam.

My Mamod flat bed truck is now 40! My dad bought it for me when I was very very small (5)!
It did run on meths but I found Army hexamine blocks worked better. I am about to get it stripped and loads of bits renewed, drive bands and a paint job, just like the Scoob.
It will then run on the fuel tablets and be handed over to the grandson.
