dog advise please :)
right ... my Rottweiler is about 8 months old... ever since a small puppy he has been "sexually" active with his teddy... and now has moved on to try to s**g me / my leg!!
I would like to stud him as I think he's a good looking boy *not in a weird way though* and i'm also hoping this might stop him trying it on with me
has anyone on here ever mated their dogs and how did you find it, do you have any advise for me please
thanks
Steph xx

If he has displayed "behavioural problems" since a young age, I would not recommend breeding him.
"Mating" attempts can also be seen as domination, and not actually thinking he can hump your leg at all. That sort of behaviour needs stopping. IMO anyway.
Very few dogs hump for egotistical reasons, its usually domination or plain and simple mating. So im not sure that him "getting his leg over" is going to stop anything.
Most non registered breeders are usually bred amongst friends. Registered KC ones, proper ones are very picky, and would not dream of whoring their bitches.
Thats my opinion anyway, based on a limited knowledge.

you might also find that owners of bitches will not be interested in him as a stud dog unless he has shown results in competition or field trials, either that or he has an exceptional pedigree. Some less reputable breeders may look in but there not interested in the welfare of the dogs just the money!
As said about if he is showing signs that he wants to hump you then dont let him do it. This can also lead to aggression if he is left to dominate and you later decide that it no longer acceptable. IE: one he's done it several times, he'll try it on at every occasion.

Generally putting a dog to stud will make him push for more dominance.
His behaviour with you strongly suggest domination - fine in a Westie, not so funny with a fully grown rottie.
I would suggest going to some dog training classes or get a dog behaviourist to speak to you (they don't work with the dogs, they work with the humans).
There are some really simple things an owner can do to establish dominance over their dog. And doing it consistently will make them much happier and more content.
Taking him to breed before you do this is a risk.

I would also add that if you have ever seen a dog and a bitch together, as the bitch comes into season and goes through the cycle, you will notice that the male is usually confused a little rather than bouncing about screaming " a hole is a goal"
However see 2 dogs interacting and one displaying dominance, and you will see that mounting, front on, rear on or side on is a clear determination of domination.
Its good from time to time to give a reminder of dominance, and show who the boss is.

The best thing to do is to find a good behaviourist who can work out why your dog does what it does, then and only then you can be sure to breed from him.Try your vet who may have local information to hand

Snazy is right...
Its a domination thing.. He is growing up and see's you as leader of the pack.So your the one who gets his attention if he wants to make it up the social ladder..
It does need sorting out as it can get out of hand..
Oh,i quite envy your dog..

8olloc$ off.
Or training. If he's boning your leg he is being dominant over you.
Its unacceptable behaviour.
Impose your dominance over him, don't allow him on your bed, feed him after you have eaten. ignore him and only give him attention when you want to. Your vet will refer you to behavourist.

Why do you want to stud him?
There are plenty of Rottie puppies around already.
He's obviously frustrated - it's kinder to him to have them chopped off.
He'll calm down and be a wonderful pet & companion.

We've got three Rotties, a 6 year old boy, and 10 year old bitch and an 8 week old pup.
I have to agree with pretty much all that's been said above.
Looking at the humping first - as has been said its 90% dominance. Bitches do it as well as dogs. I'm not sure mating him would make him any worse with you, but it certainly wouldn't make him any better.
A Rottie will, for most of its adolescent life, from pup to maturity, try and be the dominant party. Bitch or dog, makes no difference. Its a breed trait. At 8 months old its not too late to sort it, although it will take some effort on your part. You need to establish dominance which means:
- Feeding him directly after you eat and never before. You may have to adjust his mealtimes to suit over time.
- Making him wait at doorways/gates/stairs etc for you to go first.
- Not leaving toys down. You control when he gets the toy and you control when it gets taken away. Try and take it away before he gets bored and leaves it.
- Do not entertain him when he comes to you demanding attention. Only give him attention when you decide the time is right.
- Do not let him sit on you. If he humps, gently push him off with a firm but quiet "no".
- Don't make too much noise/fuss if he does something wrong, but reward good behavior. Positive reinforcement is the way.
- Ignoring him when you come home, no matter how "happy" he is to see you. By all means make a fuss of him, but do it a few minutes after you come home on your terms. Dogs that go mad when you come home are not "just happy to see you" but are often, in fact, re-establishing dominance.
- When out walks, do not let him dictate pace or direction. You decide what he gets to do and who he gets to see.
- If not already, get him to a dog training class. Try and seek recommendations
Now - the stud issue - if, and only if, you sort the dominance issue
Assuming he's a pedigree dog, get in touch with your local breed club and talk to them. You'll need him hip (at the very least) and elbow scored before any reputable breeder will entertain you. They will need to see him, and establish his temperament. At 8 months he's not fully developed and so probably too young anyway to assess his final build and appearance. Show results are not essential as a good breeder will be able to tell how good he is by examining him, but they are advantageous.
Doing it any other way is totally irresponsible and makes you not worthy to be involved with the breed.
In reality, unless you intend to make a career of him being a proper stud dog (which is absolutely fine by the way if he's a good, strong, healthy, balanced example of the breed) its much better to have him castrated for his mental and physical health. At 8 months he's just reaching sexual maturuty so experiencing massively increased testosterone levels which will only add to the dominance issue. He'll be confused, stressed and a bit all over the place. He absolutely needs you to be in control.
Yes' he'll also be horny, but don't try and assiciate his hornyness with that of humans. He's not wandering about looking for a **** - he's probably wandering about wondering what the **** is going on in his head
Any questions, PM me.

The stuff DD has mentioned regarding the dominance are the basics covered at puppy training classes. I can't recommend the courses highly enough, I put my Lab through the KC puppy class immediately followed by the Bronze course and with the continued enforcement at home of what went on in training it has made a huge difference to her behaviour.
The classes I went to were recommended through our Vet and the trainer was superb helped by the fact he was also a Guide Dogs for the blind dog trainer for his full time job and ex military police dog trainer/handler. If you can find someone like that they are worth the time and money at weekends to take your dog to.
