Question Whats Cheaper....

Well its almost time to turn the heaters on and Im wondering whats cheaper??

I have a 2bed semi detached timber framed house with gas central heating.

I have it set to come on at 5am for an hour on max heat (25+) and then again an hour just before I come home and then an hour at a time when required. - If Im not at work I still do this but obviously hit the hour button as required.

I have always done this and my gas is roughly the same price all year..

So I wonder. Should I chance leaving the heaters + hot water on 24/7 to see if it is actually cheaper and chance a massive gas bill or is it actually cheaper to keep a house simmerig all day as aposed to heating it from cold all the time?

Discuss....

cheaper as you're doing it, but reduce the temperature a few degrees if you want to save money

I always just leave the heating on through the night. Keeps the flat warm but not hot, and stops it from getting too cold.

Throught the day when I'm at work, I switch it off, timed to come on 30 minutes before I return home.

leaving the heating on all the time is not cheaper we have tried it, you are best doing what you are and like sadi above turing the temp down a bit.

Get yourself a programmable room stat. My gas bills used to be massive, now they are much better. I have it set to 20.5 deg all day then it drops to 19 over night. Its on all day. If you make your house draught free its much easier to keep warm. At the moment it only clicks on for a few minutes once every couple of hours and hardly at all during the night as the house keeps the heat in a lot better.

20 degrees?

The stat is glued to 15 in our house. If theres any complaints from my wife and daughter I politely ask them to contribute to the bill.

I keep mine at 15 too, and its only on a couple of hours early morning and a couple of hours late evening, I sometimes use the electric fire if needed.
