As previous clients/customers to write you a reference.

Your potential employer is looking for a reference saying to the likes of:- Hard worker, who is well accomplished in his field etc etc.

Just tells your new employer that you're not some jobsworth.

If you cant provide ones from a previous employer then either get some big clients you have worked for to do one or try to rely on personal references from friends that are professionals.
In most cases now days a previous employer reference just says "Mikef04 worked for me from this date to that date, I can confirm his role was "whatever".
Its a standard letter and a lot of firms dont have the time to write personal stuff anymore.
If you are getting ones from previous clients or friends then try to get the key points included like trustworthy, punctual, team player etc etc.
In my experience we use references to cross check work history, for example if someone says they worked at Russel, jones and walker for 8 years on there CV then we will check the work dates from there references.

Employers do not provide subjective information for the very reason it is subjective and therefore open to interpretation and more importantly litigation.

References usually confirm that someone worked in a certain period. It may not even tell you that they may have been fired.

Just always fill in the answer to Previous occupation: section as School boy.

That should remove the need for references
