Default Philosophy corner - today's conundrum

Imagine there was a printer. This is no ordinary printer. This printer is wired at a molecular level and can 'print' anything.

If you can imagine it - the printer can print it. Diamonds, gold, CDs, or Orvis fishing rod, food, clothes, cars.

And the universal printer was available for anyone to use.

How would the world be different?

People would only become even more greedy and materialistic than they already are.

It would be nice to think people would use it for good, but I am sad to say I think most wouldn't. Too many people are just selfish and greedy.

Things would also end up becoming worth less anyway, rendering it all pointless eventually.

What happens when you run out of paper, get the printer to print some and then run it through again to print your object of choice ?, the plan is flawed

First of all I thought I would have money printed. But, they I decided I would use it to have organs printed, and give them to people who needed transplants, e.g. hearts, lungs, kidneys, etc etc.

You could almost say that the moment this is invented, world famine, disease etc would end.

And at this point greed as a basic human need becomes extinct because there is no differentiation in what you have.

So what happens then - people stop printing all sorts of crap and start making something useful.

Maybe?

If nothing else Trout, you have a fertile imagination. I reckon you could do well as an author of childrens' books! I remember reading books like that as a child!

I have got a rod built on an Orvis blank as a matter of fact and very fine it is too-it helped me land a fresh sea trout of 7lb 4oz last season which was a bit like being attached to the back of an express train for a while!

Sounds fabulous!!!

The only thing better than a fresh sea trout is a bonefish on the flats. Mind you I had a permit last year, only 8lbs and it's first run was over 200m as it took my down to the last few turns of the backing.

I envy you Trout, always wanted to have a go at bonefish. Missed my chance once when an aircraft went u/s at Belize and I thought we were going to stay offshore for a bit, but they went and mended it!!!

And it would self-destruct just as quickly as this printer could "print".

So if it's a Xerox it might take a week or two

Knowing a printer it would Jam after five copies, the cartridges would cost more than what is was producing and the would be a better faster model out before you could say boo to the golden goose you printed.

Is this not really the basis of StarTrek, they have replicators for items they need, no one gets paid and everyone works to better themselves?

Personally i'd print me up some high class hookers and laminate them to keep em fresh!
