Renting 4x4's?
Is there any decent sites to rent 4x4's? Just want to look in to pricing etc for renting one for two weeks to go over to Slovakia (lots of snow) at Christmas.
Flying over there use to be cheap, but it's quite expensive now, so thought seen there are 5 of us, it might be cheaper to rent and drive over there.....?

None of them seems to have anything available
I half thought about buying one, but don't know if I want to risk not selling it.....It would have to be quite reliable, as I'd be doing over 2000miles in two weeks. Say if I bought one for £2k, it's quite a risk not being able to sell it again. The 5 people who would be going wouldn't want to pay more than a plane flight, even though they'd probably get the money back.

You could buy a pajero and then get RAC breakdown cover, pajeros are easy to sell provided you do a good deal and don't mind losing a few hubdred on the car. Petrol will cost alot though due to the euro rate.

Yeah true. I didnt think about getting break down cover!! lol Suppose if I bought something for £1000, I wouldn't really loose much then!
Are Pajero's reliable? I'd get the 2.5 Diesel, as I'd get free diesel in Slovakia
Any other reliable old 4x4's?

Pajeros generally reliable but will cost 2k for a good one and can be prone to the headgaskets. Best stay away from Landrovers. Isuzu troops or vauxhall montereys are actually very good and available at bargain prices

for general bods to suggest on a forum it seems a great idea but you're the one going to do 2000 miles in it. Buy a 2k 4x4 and your friends will hate you most will struggle to do much over 70 and at that age you would be very lucky to get a car with no problems. Its also a long way to drive in an elderly 4x4 at 25 or so MPG
I'd stick with the original idea and if you can't hire one bite the bullet and get the plane

I've seen some Pajeros with around 70k on the clock for less than £1500 (albeit Old!). Would they be that bad?
I would worry a bit about something going wrong, but would a decent service spot any potential failures?

Landcruiser Amazon 80 series 1990 -1996 (4.2TD) very reliable, little electronics to go wrong and best of all diff locks on every axle, pretty much unstoppable off road
and the 80 series is very very sort after (even with monster mileages)

I have had reliable pajeros and montereys from 500-1000 very good cars IMO. Also for me I would much rather drive than fly more fun and you can stop somewhere on the way and see a bit more of the continent. I drove a 1989 golf mark 2 diesel 4k miles across europe last year and had no probs at all. Car clocked up 500,000 km's once it got to its destination. Just get a good garage to give a good check over the car and go on at least 1 long 1-2 hour trip before you go.

Yeah, I love driving. Just this summer I did a Euro trip in my Impreza, and clocked up around 4000 miles I think it was!
This way, were going to stop in Prague for sure, and another place for sure
Will keep looking for some then I think
hodgy, think one like yours would be too much unfortunately, but are nice!!

the one in the photo is a 100 series
but I had a 80 series before -- which I sold v easily for 3.5k it had 130k on it but was in v good condition (on an M plate)
if you looked I am sure you could pick up a similiar on for the same price
pick a good one and you would not loose any money coz at this age miliage is not an issue

You could also look into a delica, reliable, 4 wheel drive spacious and easy to sell on. Just check that its had a good service history and put some proper tyres on it. loads around for 1500

I have a Delica, I choose to drive it over my other truck and cars, I love it.
Its an L400 SuperExceed 2.8 Td Auto.
It has adjustable suspension, column shift, OverDrive, crystalite roof with electric blinds, AC front and back, 4WD or 2WD you can select on the fly, also it has high/low ratios and difflock.
It will go anywhere.....
I have removed the rear bank of seats, so I just have 4 captains swivel chairs, so there is plenty of room for at least four corpses laid in the back.
It has a sliding side door too, and no gearbox tunnel, so you can easily walk from the pass seat to the rear whilst on the move.
I would recommend one of these vehicles for your trip.
My Delica is similar to an older Shogun running a 4M40 engine, so basically its the same running gear with a different body.
My Shogun below is a later 3.2 but a similar engine and gearbox set up to the Delica.
Heather anyone ?

How much was yours if you don't mind me asking? I've heard the 2.8L fuel pump seals go...and it's costly to replace?
There doesn't seem to been too many of them for sale really for under £2k unfortunately.

Yes the pump seals do go, the symptoms are cutting out 2-3 miles into your journey, then you leave it for a while, start it up and it will run all day... Air is drawn into the fuel system through the pump seal.
I did my own and had the pump reconditioned whilst it was off.
Another common problem is the overdrive switch fails and stays on, again an easy fix.
The seal kit is cheap less than £20 but the job is an epic.
I have seen them recently go through the Liverpool dock auctions on 95/96 plates for £2000-£2500 for a good one. They tend to be low mileage as they are used for weekend recreational vehicles in Japan.
I bought mine 3 years ago from my usual dealer, so it was a bit more than that.
I use it all the time, and only use my car of a weekend, the Shogun is a Garden ornament.

Cheers Yoza
There is me and my girlfriend, who has a mini, and I have my Subaru. The other 3 are two friends, and the girlfriend sister.
We were going to buy a 4x4 just for over xmas to go over the Slovakia, then sell it when we get back. As flights are so expensive now (around £350), so if we all chipped in say £300, that would be £1500 for a car, drive there, come home, then sell it, and I pocket all the cash I sell it for! Win win.
