iPhone Problem :(
No doubt the usual suspects will come out of the woodwork with "Ha Ha's" etc.
Here's the situation.
Opening e-mail - stays open for about 3 seconds then the app closes?
Everything else seems to be working fine - just can't get to read / reply to emails!
Has anyone else had this ?

Is it an app, or part of the OS ?
Wondering if you can just reinstall that particular part of the app.
I would have thought a reboot would sort it.
Im sure Jack or Markus will have the right answer.
And not one haha
I can be serious at times.

Yeah - done a soft and hard reset, turned off push, turned off notifications.
Synchronised it with computer - Did another hard reset (held down home button and power button at top, ignored power off slider - kept buttons held down till I saw the apple appear) Got into mail, deleted 4 or 5 emails and boom - mail app shut down again
Logged onto main PC downloaded all emails so there wouldn't be much left to get sent to phone. It still shuts down on phone now to apple support on an 0844 number 10 mins in queue so far!!
Just saw advice to do a restore - will try that now - cheers
The app in question is email - part of the standard pack that comes with phone.
I had registered online with google latitude today and was testing accuracy of gps positioning of mates phone etc but don't think that would have caused the issue as it was accessed thru safari

open the mail, then hold down the home button until it returns to the home screen - this clears down the memory and closes any open apps in the background (works for other iphone apps like Safari)

Ok, what iPhone is it? 2G, 3G, 3GS? What version of the OS is it running, eg; 3.0.1? Is it jailbroken or unlocked?
Try finalzero's suggestion which could well clear things up. You've done the soft reboot and that should have helped.
Try installing a free app from the app store, then reboot the phone, then remove the newly installed app, reboot, and then see if that makes any difference at all.
Worst case, fire up iTunes, make sure the iPhone is connected. make a note of all the music that is on your iPhone (I've got a playlist in iTunes and on the iPhone, I add music to this playlist in itunes then copy that playlist over to the phone, this way I have a list of what is on the phone - I don't auto-sync the music/apps, etc...), then right-click on the iPhone item in the "Devices" list and select "backup".
Once complete, do a factory restore. Now, MAJOR thing to note here. If you are NOT on 3.1 then it WILL upgrade you to 3.1. If you ever want to jailbreak/unlock your phone then you wouldn't want to go to 3.1. You'd want to download the 3.0 or 3.0.1 IPSW file (have a look here for links to the files), and then alt/option click on the Restore button, then select the 3.0 or 3.0.1 IPSW file and then restore from that.
If you don't care about jailbreaking/unlocking just go to 3.1.
Once the restore is complete, you'll be asked if you want to set the phone as factory default, or restore from backup. I usually select the factory default option and then right click on the iPhone and select the "restore from backup" command to restore my latest backup. This will copy across, contacts, apps, pictures and settings. It does NOT copy across music though, hence my suggestion of a playlist earlier, as this will allow you to put back on the music you had there easily.
After all of this mail should be working.

Worked a treat - took less time than I spent waiting in a phone queue to speak t'apple.
If it happens again I'll try soft boot, hard boot, backup & restore in that order.
Phew - all back to normal!!!
(btw It's a 3GS running 3.1)

New iTunes and iPhone 3.1 update is a bit hit and miss but I like the iPhone config tool, at least I can now have multiple profiles for work and home and thank god Apple finally saw sense and allow us to sync music at home and work.
As for the restore I recommend that as well, I had problems much like yours so I restored the phone right back to the factory 2.0 version and then updated it, did a restore and hey presto it worked... mostly
