In Jaws (the film) when Hooper goes diving under the half sunken boat, why would a head come out the hole?

The shark couldn't have eaten the rest of the bloke through such a small hole. Was it ever explained what happened?

Odd question i know, but we have been discussing it at work, and can't think of a proper answer.

What are your thoughts?

yep seem a bit of a plot "hole" excuse the pun

but Quint did get eaten of the back of a half sunken boat at the end of the film, so maybe the same fate happened to him -- just that the shark left the head

That's a good question - how come a barely sentient carnivorous fish with a two-foot bite radius didn't nibble out those two little grapes? Perhaps it was searching its pockets and it couldn't find a cocktail stick.
