After new evidence was uncovered...my ****, the guy in question owned up to carrying out the attack 3 weeks after Shields was arrested, how can it be new evidence.

He should have been release from prison/remand then.

Jack Straw is a sh1thouse and should have got his act together months ago....

why didnt the "guy in question" go back and own up to the authorities in Bulgaria

I thought he only made his confessions in the UK -- i might be wrong though (often am btw)

Agree. The Bulgarians should be ashamed, but not as ashamed as Straw. He kept Shields in he nick for political reasons, ie. to placate the public by releasing him when something more controversial happened.
The Bulgarians at least have the argument that their justice system is 50 years behind, we have the argument that Straw the dope smoking Commie, Brown the one eyed thief, and the rest of the Labour party are compl,etely divorced from reality.

I think the conspiracy theories are a bit far fetched.

They need to be really sure before they can pardon someone. The Bulgarian authorities need to look into it really. Letting someone off on the basis that someone else has said "it was me" without being arrested has got to be a good let off for anyone else in a similar situation.
