Release of Lockerbie bomber
How on earth can this piece of **** be considered for release on compassionate grounds.
I cannot believe the public would condone this murderers release - for whatever reason.
Al Megrahi should rot in jail and fed bacon sandwiches

have you actually seen the evidence used to convict him - it is very flakey
most people in the Scottish judiciary doubt his conviction and I think there is a good bet he would have been released on appeal (and still maybe)

First up he is not a bomber, the bombers were were on the plane and got blown up. second a very large number of people are suspicious of how little evidence was used to convict him and believe he was used as a scape goat as they had to put someone in the dock.
The trial was described by a UN observer as a 'spectacular miscarrige of justice' and I do not think that there is any independant law expert involved with the case who thinks he is guilty. The pressure on the scottish law courts is mounting to grant a proper appeal and release him so rather than admit to rigging a trial to send an innocent man to prison they want him released on compasionate grounds which will stop the **** from hitting the fan when the true level of corruption is revealed.

Get hold of a copy of "The Trail of the Octopus" by Lester Knox Coleman - plenty of info about it on the Internet. Puts a very different spin on the events surrounding Lockerbie. Was Al Megrahi involved? Hard to say - I think he got an incredibly poor trial though.

It is reported that he is not guilty and was made a scapegoat for political reasons. All to do with not offending Iran before the first Iraq affair. If that is true, it is a terrible thing to take all that part of his life away as has been done.

Having just spoken to someone from the Lockerbie area, he was saying that the locals aren't happy about the possable release, though they know he wasn't soley responsable, he certainly had some involvment in it.

but I suspect he will be found not guilty on appeal, but as in the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four -- he will always be accused of some involvment in it.

I think a way out of this would have been to have a prisoner transfer deal with Libya.
That way we rescue some poor British sod and let the Libyans release him over there if they want. dl

He wants to return home to die, and to say his farewells...
The 271 innocent victims didn't get the choice or chance to say goodbye to their loved ones.

I understand that the general consensus amongst those who know the Middle East is that the bomb was planted by the Syrians, who were paid by the Iranians, and in revenge for the downing of Iran Air Flight 655 by the Americans. It's doubtful if Libya had anything whatsoever to do with it.

At the time of the trial I remember reading a lot of coverage in Private Eye about how the whole trial was a stitch-up.
As Meridian and others have said, those in the know reckoned that Syria had helped Iran obtain revenge for the USA shooting down a civil airliner. However, since then Syria had gven the West some assistance in the First Gulf War and Gadaffi/Libya were still regarded as a pariah state so it was much more convenient to "give closure" (I hate that expression) by finding a Libyan guilty.
My own opinion is that the Libyan serving time in a Scottish jail is very probably an innocent man. I think the title of the question should be changed to "Release the man who is currently in jail for the Lockerbie bombing who was convicted on very shaky evidence and probably for politically expedient reasons".
