Exercise causing sudden and strong headaches
Serious thread, i'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar?
Two weeks ago I had some sort of cold/flu and on a morning I was really bunged up so much to my wife's annoyance I would get my head over the sink and clear it all out through my right nostril (I have a deviated septum, the left one's useless). One morning I woke up with my right eye being bloodshot but thought nothing more of it. The other day, me and the Mrs were fooling around when half way through I suddenly got the worst headache I've had in my life, so bad that we had to stop! It came on instantly, lasted a couple of minutes and then the pain subsided to a faint ache which has been with me ever since. While it was strong I could hear my pulse. Since then whenever i've raised my heartbeat i've felt the headache coming back on again
I'm going to call the doctors on Monday, but in the mean time i've been doing a bit of research on the net, I know I shouldn't but I do. Does it sound logical that I could have burst a blood vessel from blowing my nose which made my eye bloodshot and is linked to these headaches? I'm guessing if this is the case it would heal itself over time?
Anyone else suffered with anything similar?

I would be phoning NHS Direct or be getting alog to A and E mate. Not the sort of thing I would take chances with.
GP will more than likely send you to hospital anyway.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
What part of the head are you getting the pain? Could it be muscular?

It's the back of my head mainly, at the top and down to the base. I was planning on calling NHS direct in the morning. I've no other symptoms so I'm not thinking it's muscular.

Note I am NOT a medic and have no specialist knowledge in this
field. I would phone NHS Direct. It can't do any harm can it?
I am only posting because a couple of weeks ago I found that if I bent over and lowered my head I got a very severe and sudden pain behind my eye on the right side of my face. Pretty sharp and made me wince. On reflection I am fairly sure it was a blocked sinus, some mild infection. It cleared up after a few days. I did get a nasal spray from the chemists but I couldn't say if this actually did any good. But you did say you had a bad cold so perhaps........
Hope it clears up and your Mrs gets what she wants

Base of the head can be caused by muscular problems without really feeling like you have a stiff neck or anything. But this sounds like it might be something else.
Have you done much heavy lifting etc recently? Could be you have done something to your back.
I take severe headaches seriously these days since a good friend had a bad headache for 3 days, which on finally going to A&E resulted in emergency brain surgery.

I had a similar thing a few years back, when getting jiggy with the missus and just as i was about to do my business a sudden headache came on which resulted in me having a lie in a dark room till the next day. The following week it happened again a few times while training in the gym. Proper knocked me out. Doctor couldn't explain it apart from "tension headache" and gave me some pills which didn't work.
Never happended again.

Snazy, i've done no heavy lifting or anything of the kind. I've been literally just chilling out for the last two weeks (i'm off for the summer, teaching's ace this time of the year! )
Mamoon, that sounds exactly the same as mine!
I phoned NHS Direct this morning, a nurse is calling me back, they said within three hours. They are rather busy because of this swine flu!

Bizzarely I had exactly the same thing but when doing pressups. Got to about 13 and Bam! Massive headache from base of skull upwards which spread towards the front throughout the course of the day.
Same thing for about 5 days running so I went to the docs and am scheduled for an MRI scan in a couple of weeks :-(

The nurse on the phone suggested it wasn't linked to my bloodshot eye and hinted it could be high blood pressure? Never suffered with this before but she said to take ibuprofen not paracetamol like I had been doing and to get myself checked out at our doctors. I'll make an appointment tomorrow.

My doctor was useless today, I got an old school one who really didn't want to know, he was more concerned that his computer wasn't working than with me. As soon as I went in and told him i'd felt ill two weeks ago he literally pulled my shirt up to listen to my heart, counted my pulse and looked up my nose, in my mouth and took my blood pressure (which wasn't high). He was rushing and pretty unprofessional to be honest. While I was talking to him about my headaches he interrupted me to say I had a deviated septum and that was causing it, he was prescribing me a nose spray. I had to tell him three times that I found out about my nose fourteen years ago but the headaches had only started in the last two weeks, he didn't want to know. He was implying that my nose was causing it and that was that. It was almost like he wanted to prescribe me something for the first problem he found and wanted to blame it all on that just to get me out of there. I had to argue with him to not get a prescription for my nose as that's working as well as it has done for the last fourteen years! He didn't care that the headaches were coming on from exercise and the old 'in out in out'. I've been asked to go back in in the morning to give a blood sample.
I've not tried anything really energetic recently so i'm not sure if they would come on again but i've still a bit of a headache so i'm keeping an eye on it. I've never really suffered with them before, there a tad annoying!

If you were blowing your nose heavily while you were bunged up as you said, you were risking not only forcing pressure into your sinuses and your inner ear canals but also infected fluid which can cause a sinus and/or inner ear infection. Very unwise to pinch you nose while blowing it since that can cause the above problem. Best to blow your nose without pinching it first. With a heavy cold the entry passages to the sinuses and inner ears swell and block up so the excess pressure can be forced into the canals but can't get out again.
If you get a sinus infection you will get bad headaches and pain and it will take a while to clear. Fluid in the inner ear can cause serious loss of balance for a while also.
This may explain the headaches that you experienced. There is little you can do but wait for it to clear up.
I speak from long experience from my previous job and problems that I had until experienced RAF flight surgeons put me straight in my early days in the job.
