Will the Police follow this through?

Will the Police follow this through?
Yesterday i was in Dunstable in Asda and my phone was stolen from me. I realised almost straight away but was unable to do anything about it as i was so far from home.
Asda would not let me call my provider from the store as apparently they have no outside line .
I had to get petrol before i left and raced home to cancel my phone. Anyway the barstewards managed to make loads of calls to Denmark Norway and Bulgaria to different landlines....

I was in Asda for 10 minutes when i noticed my phone had gone, after searching for nearly an hour i left.
I have reported the theft to the police but i am not convinced that the police will bother to do anything at the end of the day as its hardly crime of the century.
Will the police go after the thief?

In a word - No.
I had the same thing happen funnily enough all the calls were to Bulgaria as well.
It amazed me how someone would be so desperate to speak to someone so quickly after stealing it.

I know in reality that this person could be caught and prosecuted but i also know that they wont bother as its not important enough. Its hardly a deterrent to stop people doing it.
I dont know why we bother paying for car insurance and contract phones when its far easier to steal phones and drive illegally, no wonder so many do it

You will still need to report it though and gain a crime number, you will need this to claim off of any insurance you might have.

They will go as far to take details of the occurence and the phone. Give you a crime ref number for the network to use to hopefully not charge you for the calls...
Then it will just get added to the file on that spate of offences.
Unless you can give them a description of the person who took it etc, there is little they can really do.

ASDA should have an outside line - they used one to call me the other night to pick up a couple of shop lifters
Last night, I didn't bother going out to look for any criminals.
Instead I spent 5 hours looking for a 17 year old lad who was trying to top himself. Sorry about your phone, but saving life and limb is the main priority. Still, I doubt anyone on here will understand why that is more important

5 hour misper...... I dont envy you for doing that.
There is not much anyone could do to investigate, They will look at CCTV, but apart from that there is very little open to them.
It is annoying and it is a shame but there are not too many lines of enquiry to follow.

Why don't phones incorporate a simple security code - say any 2 numbers that you choose - that have to be dialled before you can make a call?
Perhaps some do?

The only way to forward (for police) is to phone the numbers and make enquiries at those number and asked "Who phoned you from England on this phone"
I take it the calls were made through your SIM card. If that card is now blocked i believe the phone provider can trace (through your IMEI number) what new SIM card is in it and if it is being used. This again can lead to more number which can be conatced.
It may take a while to do. I had one a while ago where a phone was pinched in a night club, spent 2 full days tracing numbers and calling them to try and find out who had the phone - used all sorts of ploys (tele sales, you've won a prize, recall of products... etc) but to no avail.
So yes we do try, but it is often fruitless
