Question newbie motor racing

Would be quite keen to get into a bit of amateur motor racing (track). I suspect there are quite a few of you on here that take part with your Scoobies, so just looking for pointers as to where to start. Ideally i would like a series such as Caterham etc, but open to suggestion. Preferably not F1 money too

Just do a few track days in a road car and see how you get on.

I started with very little money behind me and had to build my own cars from scratch to be able to afford it.

I never regretted it and it was great sport, we were a sporting lot then and you could trust each other when right on the edge. All good mates and the winner bought the first round

Its an eye opener when you do your first race, you suddenly find out that you are not a world beater after all, and you have a bit to learn. I still remember some bloke going past me into Stirling's bend at Brands with his foot still buried in the loud pedal when I thought I had just found the last possible braking point!

You find as you race more that the speed comes almost without realising it and the trick is to have a dice with someone at your own level and to improve as you go.

Certainly something such as the Caterhams would be a good place to learn, and they are likely to be fair minded blokes to race with too.

I do the PR for a race team. They race an Evo IX (won @ Silverstone last month/holds lap record at Castle Combe) / M3 (class win last weekend) / Caterham and prepare several other race /track cars for customers etc.... If you are serious I can give you their details and you can have a chat - they'd be happy to build /tune on their rolling road / help you run a car ....

It was the sports racing class, I borrowed a book by Mike Costin about racing chassis design from the library for a long time and used what he said to design and build the suspension. I also used to go to a car preparation firm to buy cheap bits and they let me measure the single seater suspensions up for a bit of experience. I used all that to get the geometry together and it was a very good roadholder in the end-one of those lucky accidents as they say. I used to go to the firms like Brabham and Williams to buy used parts as well at a price i could manage. I built 3 altogether, had a big crash in the second one when a rear wishbone broke after it corroded through from the inside from the chrome plating. That was a frighteningly fast crash from about 140 mph! I painted the wishbones after that!

It was great fun and the other drivers were all good blokes. No nasty tricks on the track!

I am sure you would enjoy it just as much.
