Which Blu Ray films impress you on a 50" screen?
Building work is just about to kick off on our house and I am dribbling at the prospect of my new big plasma and surround sound
But, just looking through the blu ray section, there are loads of them
Which high def films on a 50"+ screen have impressed you with their detail and, well they were just fvcking brilliant that large?
Bladerunner?
gladiator?
Which high def films really justified the big screen and all the expense?

I have yet to be blown over by a Blu-ray disk. I was however quite astounded by the picture quality of Serenity on HD-DVD as there are some scenes that just look perfectly 3D so i guess the Blu-ray version would be similar.

Loads of good BD films available. Most people rave on about Wall-e, but whilst the quality is undoubtedly fantastic, I thought the film itself wasn't much cop.
How about Casino Royale, great transfer (as is Quantum of Solace) and a good film to boot.
I also thought Transformers and Iron Man looked good. In fact, unlike Jamz3k, I think BD looks great in general, some of the transfers of old Bond films, such as Dr No, are unbelievably good considering their age.

Animated films always impress me with the detail. Madagascar escape to Africa was superb, also as above the train crash and plane crash in the knowing was great. Another that sticks in my mind is the chase scene jumping from the cranes in Casino Royale.

The Dark Knight is just outstanding mate, even on a 8ft wide image on a pj its crystal clear.
Casino Royale is good as well, lots of people say irobot is a benchmark as well but I haven't seen the blu ray of that.
Any idea what surround system you are planning to get? Its become an addiction of mine!

excellent selection of films there.
We have 000s of dvds, so replacing them is just not on, but a select few will be replaced i reckon
Deep Singh, i plan on driving the home cinema with a PS3
I am undecided between the LG 60" PS8000 and the 50" Panny NeoPDP V10. Votes on which one to go for ? 4m viewing distance. I quite like the idea of the LG as it's 1) THX and 2) we have an LG and through HDMI it is excellent.
sound will come from Onkyo 607 and a set of Quad L-ite 2 5.1 speakers.

Chef, nice amp and speakers. I can't comment on those tvs because I don't know them.
You don't have to replace all dvds, I didn't. Some blu ray versions are not really any better than the dvd through a decent upscaler. Some however are fantastic. If you do a google search for the blu ray of the old michael cain fim zulu, you will see screen shots that will blow your mind. Looks like it was made yesterday

I didn't particulary rate the dark knight?
Yes, bits of it were very good(especially the start), but other than that - average I'm afraid.
Monsters Inc looked very good - was being played in a store I visited not that long ago.

Hi Everybody!
Bladrrunner ( my favourite film) is stunning in HD. The scenery is sharper and the actors even more stubbly and sweaty than before ( and thats just the women).
Another vote for Planet Earth - if you like this kind of entertainment, its amazing.
I am waiting for the original Indiana Jones films to come out in HD. I would expect these to be excellent in HD.
Cheers

Dark Knight is pretty much the best BD I have seen - I have a 46" Viera so not quite 50".
Some BD films have pretty average transfers - T2 has not really impressed me. Wall-E is also excellent in image and sound as already mentioned.
Also, sound quality is truly variable amongst BD transfers. Again Dark Knight comes up trumps. Although as I am using a PS3 as a player I am not, yet, using True HD sound. Coming soon though.

I am using Linear PCM which supports Dolby Surround but it does not support Dolby TrueHD. My Denon supports both, Dolby True HD is 'supposed' to be better. I have not yet tried it at home.

Fair point - I believe, maybe mistakenly, that the Dolby TrueHD decoding in my Denon is 'probably' better then in the PS3.
I am using HDMI as you cannot stream TrueHD from a PS3.
