PS3 region free DVD playback?

Is there a sensible and fool proof way of playing either region1 or 2 DVDs on a PS3 (not blu ray, just normal DVDs)?

The only way I know is to copy the DVD with DVDShrink or similiar.

The PS3 doesn't even have a reliable modchip yet. I'm not sure whether it is because the console isn't as popular as the others or that Sony did a good job of making sure it is difficult to hack.
