Swine Flu
So how is it different to normal flu? I've got a heavy cold and coughing my guts up that came on out the blue in the hottest week of the year and knocked me for 6 with flu like symptoms such as aches and pains and feeling exhausted blah blah. The Mrs has it and both the kids have got croup and they've had fevers of touching 103 for 4 days but now getting better. No need for the dr's, just sit it out at home with paracetemol and calpol for the kids. To me it's just a cold and cough (although strange for this time of year but not impossible) but if you read the NHS website on swine flu the symptoms seem the same, i.e. nothing out of the ordinary
'Normal' flu kills hundreds of vunerable people in this country every winter so why is Swine Flu so special? And with such general symptoms on their website how would anyone know the difference between swine flu and normal flu or heavy cold and cough? Seems all a load of nonsense.

A 100,000 people will be catching it every week from next week.
Same as when it first broke out, the Media was making it out to be like "28 days later".

I know that's what made me look at the nhs website to see what actually are the symptoms and why they think so many will catch it. Couldn't believe the symptoms when I read them as just sounded like any other cold/cough/flu virus. I could phone in work and say i've got swine flu as my symptoms match

It's just 'flu' - no matter what you call it. Same symptoms as what we just call 'flu' (strange, maybe the clue is in the name somewhere ... ) but milder, apparently. Still, be glad it's not something serious like 'man-flu'!!!
Saw a few minutes of the so-called 'Health Secretary' on Sky yesterday announcing all this in the House of Expenses. Obviously well on top of his brief as he never looked up from his notes once. What do we pay them for again????
Oh, and a joined-up health service? Read Guido earlier at Swine Flu Update - Guy Fawkes' blog who was attempting to get his daughter seen to. It'd be laughable if it wasn't so serious.

That's what I was thinking, it being milder. With proper flu you are bed ridden no doubts about it as it really does you in. If you aren't bed ridden then generally it's a heavy cold. Swine flu doesn't seem to involve being bed ridden and so to me doesn't sound a patch on normal flu you see in Winter. Can't understand the big hooha over something that has less serious symptoms than an illness that hits this country every Winter
Those that are dieing from it or getting serious complications are either the elderly or the already sick and they would be affected just the same by normal flu.

Some Primary Care Trusts will shortly begin training all their clinical staff to give vaccine shots, with them expecting enough vaccine to start stabbing people with around August or September...

For people under 50, this is a significantly more severe disease than seasonal flu. For people over 50, it's much better,"

But ..... why? I've even seen reports that show that even the normal flu vaccine, and the groups it's administered to, have little effect. So why vaccinate against something that has mild symptoms?
Not that I gave a single thought to the theory that says that the whole hyped-up swine flu *pandemic* is politically motivated to divert attention away from the political classes and their current *troubles* ... Not a single one, perish the thought .....

I think how dangerous it is to who depends on how the flu virus changes.
For instance, the 1918 flu pandemic:

It would seem as the virus stands, the people in biggest danger are those that have existing medical problems.
For instance, the 1918 flu pandemic:
1918 flu pandemic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scientists have used tissue samples from frozen victims to reproduce the virus for study. Given the strain's extreme virulence there has been controversy regarding the wisdom of such research. Among the conclusions of this research is that the virus kills via a cytokine storm (overreaction of the body's immune system) which explains its unusually severe nature and the concentrated age profile of its victims. The strong immune systems of young adults ravaged the body, whereas the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults caused fewer deaths.

Of course, there is no reason why H5N1 would do that, but past experience should not be discounted.
